PS pump swap
Just wanted to make sure since I found one on CL today, will a Power Steering pump for a long water pump still work for a short water pump, as long as I use the short pump brackets? I'm assuming they would bolt on the same, but would the pulley also need to be changed?
I'm running a BBC and since they are hard to come by I wanna jump on an opportunity when i can! |
Re: PS pump swap
Pumps are the same the brackets are the difference. There is an exception to that and it is a pump from a serpentine setup is a little different in the way that the shaft is a different diameter and the bolt on pulley will not go where the press on pulley was. But the chance that the pump you found is one from a serp set up is small at best. Jim

Re: PS pump swap
You can get a rebuilt pump from the local parts store for less even if you eat the core charge.
While the pumps are generally the same, the pump is just the inner round iron part, while there are lots of different reservoirs, and some other variations. Buying one from a random big block is a good way to get a pump you can't use. Some also had remote reservoirs, such as BB SS Chevelles, vans and trucks w/ hydroboost brakes. |
Re: PS pump swap
the swp bbc uses a remote fill ps pump.
even though i havent tried it i dont believe the filler neck on the lwp ps pump will clear the alt on a swp bbc. although the internals are the same on the two pumps the houseings are differnt. |

Re: PS pump swap
So, if I get a pump from Rock Auto or Oreilly's or whoever, should it be a press on pulley or keyway? Looks like a press on: http://www.cardone.com/Products/Prod...d=20140&p=rock
Where would I get the pulley brand new, or would I just have to get one from a yard or off the board used? |

just keep in mind the clearance you'll have between your rad and fan if you swap too a lwp. with the oe engine mounts in the front holes and a clutch fan mine was too close for comfort thats why i'm swapping too the swp stuff and so far my mock up is goin great.. |
Re: PS pump swap
K looks like this might be the ticket:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/aaz-20-151/overview/ - keyway pump http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g3973/overview/ - keyway pulley At least I think. Not a bad price, like $80 total. If that sounds right then I'll probably skip the local one, rather have new. Would still have to find a reservoir though. |
