Thermostat or not

With the new motor i was told to knock the center out of a old thermostat to use as a restictor for the water flow . I have always run a 160 stat in the old motor and have a belt driven pump and fan . I really dont have room for an electric water pump or an electric fan. Just looking for suggestions .

Re: Thermostat or not

Personally I've never ran a thermostat. Every time I put one in on any of my vehicles, it would overheat within a couple of minutes of driving. I've also never ran an electric fan either. Just a flex fan and no fan shroud.

If your using the pump to circulate water and cool between rounds,,, ya gotta get the thermostat out of the way or it closes and you don't circulate water.

If this is the street truck..
Man on the street I've never had anything but bad luck not running a thermostat in the heat,, and where you are ,, it qualifies as FRICKEN HOT!!!

If a thermostat makes an engine overheat on a street vehicle something else is SERIOUSLY wrong in the cooling system. More than likely radiator too small or improper fan setup such as a fan with no shroud.

My last small block was 10.5-1 compression alum heads and a nasty roller cam. It ran at 200 with a 195 t stat in traffic with the dual electric fans. Stock water pump and stock 4 core brass radiator. Nothing special. On a hard blast running up through high gear it would get to 215 or so but as soon as I took my foot off the loud pedal the temp instantly came back down.

Unless you're talking about just during the brake in stage, I wouldn't EVER run an engine without a thermostat.

I think my motor was fine. Had a brand new water pump on it. All new gaskets. Motor was flushed. Didn't have any leaks. I was running a 4 core radiator. Water was moving just fine through it. I tried a lot of different thermo's for all sorts of different opening temps from cheap ones to high performance ones. Never not once overheated on me while not running a thermo.

What are you calling overheating? Did you have an overflow bottle? What temp did the engine get to?

Re: Thermostat or not

The pump is belt driven off the crank . Seems to be ok . I got to 195 with it gutted . I really need an electric pump and electric fans . I had a 160 in the old motor and it seemed to be alot less smooth on the guage .

No primarily as a drag truck

For racing electric pump and fans are a must for cooling between rounds IMO, I run that and a Moroso restrictor plate. I had added a drive motor to a Edelbrock high output aluminum pump at first and worked good even though those drive kits are notorious for crapping out. This year I'm now in the process of putting on a Moroso electric pump with one of their one piece billet brackets for a mini Denso and a vac pump.

OK , what electric water pump would be suggested ? I have 2 smaller pullers i could put on the radiator . I have a 105 amp alt , but it seems like im just adding alt load . Fans , water pump , MSD , fuel pump , Nitrous , shift noid , lights etc

Had a nice aluminum hi flow water pump.
Made the the t stat stay shut. Took it off and went back to the plane cast iron and the problem stopped...
160° stat with 3 1/8 holes in it.
165-180° belt driven pump electric fan.

Re: Thermostat or not

Most of the Mezerire style pumps require 7" or so . I dont have that much room . It will have to be remote or belt drive electric .

Check the length of a moroso for a SB, I know for my BBC it was shorter, mine is only 6 1/4"
