Help me identify this rear

Hey all,

Picked up this rear end yesterday. I was told it's from a 69 Suburban.

Overall the width appears to be the same as the Dana 60 in my 66, however the leaf spring perches are about 2" further inward, along with the shock mounts.

Can anyone confirm what this rear is from from a photo?

I'd like to order the conversion axles and start cleaning this up, but want to make sure the time is worth it on the rear.

Thanks!

On the front passenger side of the axle tube are the code letters that will tell you what gear ratio it came with, I can look that up or if you have a GM parts book, then theres a date cast into the center section. Hope this helps

Hmm. Well that could suck I suppose. Other than relocating the perches anything that would prevent this working in the truck?

Would the aforementioned numbers (by Member 60-66) give insight into what this came out of?

I assuming its 6 lug being 69 ?. Yes the letter code on the tube will tell you car or truck

Yes, it's a 6-lug. Planning on converting to 5x5 to match the front.

OK, I just bought a 1968 and a 1972 truck rear. Looks identical to yours physically. Yours is a leaf spring rear, not a coil spring. If you have a GMC leaf spring truck it will bolt in. Im confused that the pads are 2 inches further apart though ? Did you measure center to center ?

Re: Help me identify this rear

The pads are two inches closer together measured center to center than on the Dana 60. I'll remeasure tomorrow but if I remember right the Dana was about 43" and the 12 bolt was about 41".

Re: Help me identify this rear

That is a 12 bolt from a '64-'72 leaf sprung truck. I'm thinking it is likely from a 4x4, which IIRC the springs are closer together on the 4x4's.

Re: Help me identify this rear

I believe you're correct. Now that you mention it I think it was from a 4x4. Is it the same otherwise? Mainly thinking axles. Will your disk brake brackets work?

Re: Help me identify this rear

Yes, it is still a truck 12 bolt. I would verify the width or the length of the axles before you order them. Yes, either of my rear disc brackets should bolt right up.

Hey Siggy.
I'm not sure if you and I have same rear. (You responded to me regarding "noises in drive line"
I too have 66 gmc, swb, inline 6, with Saginaw trans. The person I bought from was a gmc service manager and seemed to know his stuff. He said my rear end was Dana 44, open differential, 342.
Let me know if I can measure anything, or read any number. I will look at more closely. If you can post back or side photos it would help.

Re: Help me identify this rear

Since I have the smaller rear set up I'm prob not that helpful but I did see a casting number on the top pass side of differential (44 . 1)
also went to spicerparts.com and found lots of info on our differentials and ujoints. it cover parts and videos. the phone # is 800-621-8084. Since Spicer and Dana are a joint enterprise, they would prob know exactly what you have.

Re: Help me identify this rear

Thanks for the help. Did spicer make Chevy 12 bolts? The dana is what I took out, but the part number above is from the 12-bolt.

Re: Help me identify this rear

as much as I'd like to help, I am not equipped to answer your question. I knew that Spicer and Dana were joint so I went to the Spicer site I mentioned to look up ujoint info. I also entered 44 dana in the search bar and brought up info ... I called them today and left message re parts and haven't heard back yet. I'm sure they would need a couple full time employees just to help us forum guys. Good to know they're out there. good luck.
