Transmission??

Hey! I have a 63 c10 and I made an interesting discovery that I don't have the original motor as I thought. I thought I had a 230 but it turns out it's a 250 inline 6 from a 67-72 c10 (I looked up the Casting number). Now with that being said, I have desperately been trying to identify the transmission I have connected to it.

It's a 3 on the tree manual column, There is NO pan under the transmission, and I found numbers just behind the bell housing on the drivers side that read 37219 as you can barely see in the picture.

Do you guys have any idea what transmission this is?

Zoom out and take an overall picture of the trans from the driver side. From what I'm seeing in that little picture up there, its a Muncie SM318 non synchro 1st gear trans.

Thanks so much you guys, do you know if this transmission may have been used original factory in the 63 c10's?

Re: Transmission??

Yes, that would be the original type of trans for a 3 speed truck in 63.

Re: Transmission??

It's the same as what would have came in there.

Looks like you have a high-hump floor/transmission tunnel cover that came from something with a SM420 "granny" four speed with the transmission mounted parking brake. I think '63's had a removable low-hump cover though, so that might be the only thing swapped.

Last question I promise, I'm learning this so bear with me:

Is it possible I can put an over drive gear in and keep it a column shift? Or would I have to move to the floor?

Sure. They were more common than you realize.

Here is a link which explains every detail. Just scroll down a few posts and it gets to the tech.

Re: Transmission??

The most significant problem with your truck is not the replacement engine.....the trans is installed upside down. :)
