trying to decipher my engine codes
So i have my 67 Chevy with a rebuilt small block. The Casting number is 3970010 so i take it its fair to assume its a 350 correct? I am also aware that there is another code i need to pull that i can find on the passenger side of the engine? is this on the head or on the block or what? please help me out i would love to know the history of this engine also i know that 350's were not put in 67 so is there a chance this could be the original 327? I am dying to know and any wisdom and or knowledge is greatly appreciated!!!

I have no answers other than to visit this site. It makes my eyes go crossed, but I'm kinda simple headed.

Re: trying to decipher my engine codes
It's probably a 69-80 350 2 or 4 bolt main. It could be a 327 2 bolt main or even a 302 4 bolt main but I doubt it. Despite not being a 67 original engine, it's still a good block. No matter what it's a 4 inch standard bore block with 68 and up style large journals with pretty good iron alloy. I give your odds of having a 4 bolt main about 90% if it's a pickup engine and about 10% if it's a passenger car engine. Does it still have the serial number stamped onto the RF corner of the deck? Here is a good site for casting number description.

It is indeed a 350. High nickel block. The 'best' stock block. Came in both 2 and 4 bolt mains.

I think it's a 74 Chevelle engine came with 2bl carb, 145hp. Are you going to rebuild it?

Re: trying to decipher my engine codes
thanks guys! i am going to rebuild it eventually but it is far from its original 145HP. Its been bored .30 over and it has Hedman Ceramic long tube headers, Edelbrock Performer Intake a Huge cam previous owner didnt know the specs i guess? To top it all off its got a 750 Holley double pumper. Not the best setup i get like 5 mpg, it runs really rich to keep the idle low enough so it doesn't diesel. I dont know how much power it puts out but its fast as hell and will roast the tires through 2nd. Its got really tall gears so it gets all the way up to like 70 and calls it quits. its all the way up to like 4000 rpms.:chevy:
