Transfer case help
1984 GMC 1 ton 4x4 transfer case stuck in low range or neutral.
Can move the low and neutral pin with a pry bar to chance them but Can't get the lever to go to 2 wheel or 4 high. |
Re: Transfer case help
Do you know what t case you have in it ?
|
Re: Transfer case help
Check out the NP205 rebuild thread on the front page of the 4X4 tech section.
I just rebuilt mine with the help of this info. It shows the shift shafts and detent balls. |

Re: Transfer case help
Just looked at the NP205 thread, What a great job on that!
Now I am wondering if maybe the detent balls are out of place or if it has a broken spring in the one shaft that won't move. My linkage is defiantly different than that one in the pics. |
Re: Transfer case help
Still looking for some help and don't want to keep high jacking others threads!
|
Re: Transfer case help
First thing is to figure out which one you have.
Can you post a pic of the rear side of the transfer case? |
Re: Transfer case help
Ok I found your thread. So waiting on those pics.
|
Re: Transfer case help
It should be a np205 but you never know with a older truck people swap things out for odd reasons.Like said take some pictures of the t case one of us can id it for you.

Re: Transfer case help
I Removed lower detent (Gage)spring and ball and still can't move the rod in any direction.
This is the lower rod that is stuck and appears to be all the way out. I can move the top rod in and out one place and that makes the truck either in low range or neutral but I can't get it back into gear (with shifter) with out crawling under it and moving it with a pry bar. Not sure if this rod should move more than that. How do I post pic or who can I sent them to that will post them for me. Thanks |
Re: Transfer case help
Still waitin on info on which tcase u have... Assuming a 205 hit it with a hammer. Worked for me when i dropped mine out of a cherry picker 6' up

Re: Transfer case help
Are you trying to shift without moving the driveshafts? You have to align the gears somehow and in a real situation the truck would be moving the gears a bit with the trans being in neutral it still moves and releases some tension on the gears and some movement is needed.
And as stated above we need pics !!! No more posts from myself til pics are taken and posted! LOL:smoke: My bad! look for the "go advanced" link on the lower right of your post. Click and look for the paper clip in the choices. Click and browse find your pic.Either saved to your computer or from your camera card inserted in your computer. Make sense? |

5 Attachment(s)
Lets see if the pics work!
1: Rear of transfer case. 2: PTO side of transfer case. 3: Front of transfer case with linkage set-up. 4: Inside sticks. 5: Shift pattern on stick. |
Re: Transfer case help
Good job! Man you are a pro at pics already! That looks to be a NP205. I may have missed it but what is the PTO for?
Make sure it is disengaged before trying to shift the case. Your case linkage seems to be in order and correct. I am thinking your issue may be something to do with the PTO. I would clean all that junk off there(first) and see if it isn't just stuck from rust or something. |
Re: Transfer case help
I believe your problem is the PTO. Pull it!
|
Re: Transfer case help
jjzepplin, Thanks for helping me with the pics and everything else so far!
PTO is for the dump box. Dump box will go up if PTO is engaged and truck is moving and if not moving the truck you have to put everything into neutral to dump it. Does this make sense to everyone? If I pull the PTO is anything going to fall apart? |
Re: Transfer case help
Some fluid may come out but every PTO I've ever taken out no parts fell out. Simple gear to gear type install.
Clean that thing off first! |
