Wiper switch ?
 

So have any of you seen this wiper switch like this one? And can I get it to work on my 78? Thanks for the help.

That's a delay wiper switch, and I don't think it will work on a 78. It requires a delay module in the dash and a flat wiper motor. Is your motor rounded?

My wiper motor is getting replaced hear soon so I can get what ever one I need to to make it work. The motor that it has does not look flat to me so I would say no. There is a box attached to the back of the switch. Hear is a pic. Let me know what you think.

I see you got the delay box, too, that's a good thing. If you want to make all that work, you will need a 79 or later motor and the wires. I was going to do this on my 77 but never could find all the parts, so just gave up on that and put it on a 79 I had. That one was just plug and play.

That's the whole 78-83 delay switch and module. 78 definitely had delay wipers as an option not just 79 & later. Yes you can get it to work on your 78 and later if you pay attention to the schematic and if the delay module is working.
The GM schematics call out Delphi #12004706 plug on the standard and delay wiper harness. Meaning the same harness plug connects to the delay box or the standard wiper switch. You may be able to plug it right in and get delay wipers.

These 1970's delay modules were made with discrete components... Relays, Transistors, Resistors, and Capacitors... not usually microchips or if they included a chip it was a unit like the good old 555/556 that you can buy anywhere. Discrete electronic circuits are pretty tough and they can be repaired by an enterprising soul with a little electronics knowledge... Even a burnt trace can be repaired
As long as GM didn't POT them like the late '80s delay modules or the 73-75 tachs.

Delay wipers were an option in 77 but it's a very different animal from the 78-83 units and a fairly rare option too.

Ok now I got problems! So I hooked it up and the first click of the selector does nothing then the 2 & 3 do the normal fast and faster. So I took it apart, lost the ball bearing then improvised, cleaned it then tried it again. Still same result? Bad switch or is the wiper motor just not ment for that switch?

The knob changes the delay timing in position 1. This will run the 78 wiper motor if the delay box and Potentiometer in the switch are good.

I'd have to draw up a schematic of the module to really troubleshoot it.

That board is so extremely simple it could be duplicated in an afternoon.
2 TO92 package Transistors and a bunch of Electrolytic Capacitors, Resistors, Diodes, and a DIP Chip.
Is that TO220 package device on the bottom of the board a FET or Voltage Regulator?
What numbers are on the DIP chip? My money would be on some variant of the 556 or some other '70s era timing chip.
I may have to buy one to satisfy my curiosity. See what you did... :D

A 4001 CMOS is a quad nor gate. I used to build astable oscillators using the 4011 quad nand gate with students when I taught electronics. I imagine a 4001 could be wired similarily. A 555 of 556 would be easier, and is the main chip in most of the old aftermarket intermittent wiper modules.

Ok so u got it working, had to jimmy rig it though. When I pulled I must have bent the copper peace that turns the wiper on furring the window washing mode. So I couldn't get it bent back into place do I just clipped it off! I don't have any of the window washing peaces anyway! But it works now! Thanks for all the help guys
