The other shift pattern is for car transmissions; left and down is correct for the SM420.

The reverse on the SM420 is to the left and down. The SM465 is to the right and down. The only trans that I can think of where reverse is left and up is in heavy duty trucks.

Most of the car four speeds have the left and up pattern.

Leaving an incorrect pattern on the ball won't faze an experienced operator, but it may foil a novice joyrider or tweeked out thief.

some came without any pattern. friends had a 49 gmc and a 63 chevy and no pattern on either one. both were stock trucks. this was back in the day.

My 64 has the SM420 with reverse at the left down..same with my 66. I have an 84 with the SM465 and reverse is at the right down. :chevy:
