Re: 4 speed shifting knob

The other shift pattern is for car transmissions; left and down is correct for the SM420.

Re: 4 speed shifting knob

The reverse on the SM420 is to the left and down. The SM465 is to the right and down. The only trans that I can think of where reverse is left and up is in heavy duty trucks.

Leaving an incorrect pattern on the ball won't faze an experienced operator, but it may foil a novice joyrider or tweeked out thief.

some came without any pattern. friends had a 49 gmc and a 63 chevy and no pattern on either one. both were stock trucks. this was back in the day.

Re: 4 speed shifting knob

My 64 has the SM420 with reverse at the left down..same with my 66. I have an 84 with the SM465 and reverse is at the right down.

Re: 4 speed shifting knob

Having to shift through 12th to get from 5th to 6th really sucks...or do you go back around the other way?
