DTC code 54, fuel pump relay

Hello everybody I have a 94' gmc sierra 2500 4wd with 350 Tbi/auto. My truck has been acting a little weird lately. It seems to not want to start as easily as it used to. Its also sputtering when trying to start first thing. Also sometimes when I'm shifting from drive to park it'll just die completely. I noticed recently that it feels a bit sluggish going up hill and it was while I was driving uphill that the check engine light came on. I checked it and it was a code 54. Does anybody have any experience with this particular code? I just don't have a lot of time and money to be spending chasing my tail. My thought is that it's either the fuel pressure regulator, or the fuel pump is starting to go out. Any input is appreciated.

Re: DTC code 54, fuel pump relay

My guess is, the fuel pump is going bad and it has damaged the fuel pump relay or wiring connections.

A code 54 happens when the computer does not see power on the circuit from the fuel relay to the fuel pump, when the computer is sending power to the relay to apply the relay.

Sometimes when the fuel pump is failing the currant flow through the pump goes up considerably. This tends to damage many of the parts of both of the fuel pumps redundant circuits melting and damaging the connection at the fuel pump, fuel tank sender, fuel relay, and wire harness.
