Cowl gasket placement?
Bought a new rubber piece for the end of the cowl that seals the hood. Can't seem to get the hood to close easily with it on.
Does anyone have a pic of one in place or any advice on getting it right? Thanks |

Re: Cowl gasket placement?
Should it go down to bottom of cowl?
I have the placement right but maybe I made it go too wide across...?? |

Re: Cowl gasket placement?
Buying aftermarket replacement parts does not mean they fit you may have to provide some creative fitment procedures .in other words just because some parts suppiler says the fit does not mean they actually do ! buy NOS or deal with after market :smoke:

Re: Cowl gasket placement?
Litew8's got it right. I've heard this complaint from several, mainly that the seal is rock hard and will not allow the rear of the hood to close. I got lucky and found an NOS seal. I have seen the seal from Presision, seems to be much more pliable and should work fine.

Re: Cowl gasket placement?
I've read several threads the last few years discussing the lousy fit of the repop seals so, I guess you are not alone. Here's a link to one thread that comes up if you search for "cowl seal".

Re: Cowl gasket placement?
JC Whitney sells Presision gaskets cheaper than most after market shops :chevy:

Pretty sure they are still available from GM?

Re: Cowl gasket placement?
Mines sittin back in the bag it arrived in. Lifted the back of the hood up when trying to close. Fit like garbage.

Re: Cowl gasket placement?
I used Pression and my hood shuts fine !

Re: Cowl gasket placement?
I have the same problem. Mine is from brothers. I've thought about just trimming the height a little.

Re: Cowl gasket placement?
I got mine from Classic Parts also. No Issue. I cant invision it being so stiff that it holds the hood up. (Not saying it isnt :). ) Mine was nice and pliable. Just wondering before we parts bash, this seal goes UNDER the Cowl. Couple of things, was any of you guys hoods adjusted to the cowl WITHOUT a seal installed? Could let the cowl ride lower in that case. Cowl can be slightly shimmed if the hood wont adjust down..
Also if the hood was adjusted to far forward towards the cowl lip, may lift it a little with the seal there. Those seals just seam wimpy to be causing all this. Check all adjustments. Or tell me to buzz off you dont know what your talking about! Im ok with that too :). Just trying to help. |
Re: Cowl gasket placement?
After I bought mine from LMC read on here that that is the wrong type it is like an L shape you need one with more of a V shape like this one from ebay:

Thanks alot |
Re: Cowl gasket placement?
I have the LMC one and it lifted the back of my hood. I replaced the dry rotted original. Before replacement, the hood sat even with the cowl.
I haven't yet cared enough to try to fix it. |
Re: Cowl gasket placement?
I am thinking about buying this seal which is for our trucks and lists Part# 6270848:

Re: Cowl gasket placement?
Seriously? $14.85
The one I posted is 1/2 that price. Classic Parts of America 38-114 (1967-72) Hood to Cowl Seal 1 $7.95 Actually, last I looked - they may have upped the price $1 to $8.95 http://www.classicparts.com/images/38-114.JPG Also, keep in mind what we are talking about this seal being installed UNDER is the COWL Cover, not the cowl itself. Cowl: the part of a motor vehicle that supports the windshield and houses the dashboard. Cowl cover: The cowl gasket installs underneath this. http://ilsiciliano.net/truck/DSC04136.jpg Cowl exposed without its cover: http://ilsiciliano.net/truck/DSC03430.JPG |
Re: Cowl gasket placement?
I have always seen it called a "hood to cowl seal".
|
Re: Cowl gasket placement?
Right. Technically, it's a hood to cowl cover seal. It actually sits on top of the cowl itself, folds over the top of the cowl cover.
|
Re: Cowl gasket placement?
Weak and worn hood springs are the reason for the ride up. The seal is stiff but weak springs/hinges are the culprit. Typically an adjustment to the rear bolt of the springs will drop the hood and cause it to sit flat even with a cheap stiff gasket.
