New to me and need some guidance

I just bought this 64 shortbed with a 292 3 speed manual trans with a 3.08 rear gear. The challenge is the trans does not have a synchro 1st gear and when trying to turn corners that are to slow for second gear it is all but impossible to get it in 1st until you are almost stopped.

Is there a 3 speed that will replace the one in my truck with a synchro 1st gear. I really like the 3.08 rear gear for highway driving.

Any potential easy and inexpensive options to my problems would be appreciated. Thanks

double clutch. push clutch in shift from second to NEUTRAL let clutch out. Push clutch back in shift to first. once you start doing it you wont be able to un do it.

Will that really work? Isn't there a synchroed 3 speed?

of course it works! thats how everyone shifted before syncros. I think later 3 speeds were syncro 1st, but that one is not. your problem is the 3.08 rear gear makes it work on the highway but hard to drive at low speeds.

I forgot to mention, you need to blip the throttle a bit to get the revs up before shifting into first.

you could always lug it out in second, the 292 has a ton of bottom end torque.

Leave it in Second. Slip the clutch, wind the engine up. If its pulling at1000 to 1200+ rpm, it'll pull all but the steepest incline while turning. Its a long stroke torque motor. Don't be afraid to use it.

Here's how I shift to 1st...66 chevy c10 with an sm420 4 speed with granny low....shift down to 2nd...let the truck slow down to idle...Without pushing the clutch in pop it out of 2nd..tap the gas as you pop it out...then slide up to 1st by rev matching....meaning reving the engine to the speed it would take to go that speed in 1st and it'll fall right in. Its really easy to do, especially when ya get the hang of it. :chevy:
