Brake light wiring problem

Have a 98 chevy c1500 when you hit the brakes it blows the fuse. Unhooked the brake switch all other lights work fine.Looked for a bad wire around switch and under dash but saw none. Does the wire run up the steering column. Though I would look up there. Any ideas Thanks

i would think it is a bad switch. may be shorting internally. if you have a brake controler try unplugging it and see if it blows the fuse.

Tried a switch still the same thing. I will check the steering column next could it be the turn signal switch? Thanks

Re: Brake light wiring problem

A possibility is the relay for the high visibility brake lamp (light on the cab).

We have discussed this before at the Chevytalk.org board in the area for these years of trucks.

You could do a search.

Re: Brake light wiring problem

I just went throught this with my 3500. After all week and replacing brake switch it turned out to be the brake light motherboard (for lack of an official name and being from silicon valley) in the tail light. $20 at Oriellys. You know the one. It plugs in to your tail light.
