327 Motor Coming out what else to replace?
So I am planning on taking my the motor out of my 64 C10 in the next month or so since I have some leaks from the rear main seal as well as timing chain cover. I am putting a list together of items to replace while this is happening and would love to hear any other suggestions for parts to replace or best place to source some decent fitting parts.
Here is the list I put together so far. Oil Pan and gasket Timing Cover and Gasket Front Main Seal Water Pump Gasket Possible new timing chain??? Thanks for the input...also I did a search but didnt see anything so point me there if this has already been discussed. Thanks again |
Re: 327 Motor Coming out what else to replace?
I would do the freeze plugs also. Having replaced them once in my 69 firebird while the motor was in was not fun.

Re: 327 Motor Coming out what else to replace?
Definitely replace the timing chain, and I would also replace the oil pump and pickup screen.

also prime the oil pump before installing it ...

Re: 327 Motor Coming out what else to replace?
I would get a full gasket set and just do the whole thing. $41 at summit if I remember right . I just got one for my 283. I would hate to pull the engine and then have a head gasket blow.. That would blow..

Re: 327 Motor Coming out what else to replace?
I thought this was going to be a question about what other engine to put in instead...like big block, LS, etc..
Depending on the mileage and condition it might be the time (while it's out) to do a total refresh with rings, bearings and heads reconned. Keep the 327, for sure. |
Re: 327 Motor Coming out what else to replace?
I'd check compression first. If still good then slide in some bearings when the pan is off as well as what already has been mentioned. If compression is low do the full rebuild.

Re: 327 Motor Coming out what else to replace?
All great responses - I am definitely keeping the 327 since the block looks to be healthy; I am just getting some rear main leaks and figured its worth taking it down before summer and replacing some things that will make it reliable for years to come.

I would also drill and tap the crank snout so you can bolt on the harmonic balancer.

replace the valve seals on the heads.
