Help me figure it out

Hey brothers I've recently picked up a 1962 C10 the previous owner told me it had a pontiac 400 motor and didn't mention what transmission it has. So my question is Can anyone help me figure out what I have in my truck.

Is it manual or Automatic? What are the numbers on the trans? Pictures?;)

Re: Help me figure it out

If it is an automatic there are lots of places on the net that have the layout of the pan and you just match the drawing to your trans. If it is a manual more ino and a picture would be a big help.

Fixed your pictures

Pontiac blocks can be anything from a 350 to a 455 depending on the year. MY guess is you got a 389 or 400. Far as the automatic, it is probably be be pontiac's version of the Turbo-400

Best bet is to get the numbers off the block and check them on the web and same for the tranny, or at least a photo of the tranny side and pan.

Re: Help me figure it out

On the drivers side of the block by the engine mount there is a number cast into the block ... not all of them had it .. that will be the engine size .. not all of them had it though ..also , do you have a pick of the trans pan??? You do have a pontiac though...

Re: Help me figure it out

On my Chevy block, there is an area on the passenger side head surface area that sticks out with numbers stamped in it. From that code I was able to figure out what engine I had. I was told I had a 350CI, not so, it turned out to be a 305.

Check out a site like this..

Sweet, I'd love to have poncho in mine!
Keep in mind that Buick/Olds/Pontiacs are not chevy's
Externally they look the same
But they rotate in the opposite direction

Re: Help me figure it out

Ha I do it to. if the motors turned the other way we would have 3 speeds in reverse but a hell of hole shot in first ha ha. On the old direct reversible diesels we could bring to stop and then slide the camshaft to reverse lobes and when ya started it again it would run backwards.
