interchanging and matching 97 & 96 tranny's
I know there is a ton of info out there on the web AND SHOPS but wherever I look, I find a different opinion that tries to sound official and it contradicts what others are saying. For example one place says a 97 4l60e 4dw tranny from a suburban is a direct swap for a 96 and vice verse. But a 97 tranny from a pickup they say will not fit in a 96 burb. I am thinking of upgrading to a 4l80e and my cousin is offering to by the 4l60e off of me but will it fit in his 97 1500 truck? Are the input shafts the same? Are the bell housings the same between the 96 & 97 years? Do the transfer cases mount the same? Are the pin connectors the same? Does the PCM need to be reprogrammed?

PCM will likely need a reprogram.
Physically, they'll fit. Input and output shafts are the same size. The 4L80E changed coolant line connections right about that time, that might be a stumbling block for you, but not for him since 4L60E's kept the lines in the same spot. |

I am fairly sure that 96 and early 97(1 piece case) are interchangeable. That's 4l60e. Id shoot a pm to clinebarger.
