Re: HELP!!! i can't stop!

Did you let the master cylinder sit awhile after you filled it to push the air out? Any air in the system can cause issues like that. Also did you adjust the brakes so you have a slight drag when you turn them by hand?

Re: HELP!!! i can't stop!

The previous owner had all that done on my 65 (all original) and mine stops great. So well in fact that I have made up my mind that it does not need any brake upgrades until something wears out.

I would think that there must be something wrong with your master, or the adjustment of the shoes because with everything new it should stop, maybe not as well as disc brakes, but you should feel under control during normal driving.

The only item I can think of that you did not mention would be the rubber lines, they tend to swell under pressure rather than push the fluid where it belongs.

Agree with the recommendation to check the adjustment. After I did the master cylinder upgrade and brake service, I didn't really notice much difference, that is until I got the adjustment right at the wheels.

We don't need know stinken BRAKES. Did you put the same master cly. back on. This is the trk with the pont motor, correct? It looks to me like you have a dual master cly. on that trk. one side for brakes and one side for the clutch. which you ain't got. ya sure you got the brakes hooked up to the correct ram. did you bench bled the master cly.? I suppose ya just bleed both sides and then plug off the clutch side. I'm not really sure. I never went from manual to auto in these early 60's trk. I like manuals.

Hi how's it going. I kinda had the same issue with my truck. One thing is did you ever bench bleed the master cylinder. Another thing you can try is to open up the bleed screw on the master. After it took me like 5 to 6 times going around the truck and driving it a little to get all the air out. Make sure you do it in the right order. Right rear, left rear, right front, left front. Hope this helps.

Re: HELP!!! i can't stop!

I'd toss my strongly-felt vote toward proper adjustment. I've found the only SURE way to nail it 1st try is to use this method: tighten the adjuster all the way down--the drum will not turn here, of course. Now back off the adjuster until you have that 'slight drag' that is so often mentioned. Go to next drum & do the same. Continue until all 4(Order does not matter.) have been adjusted THIS WAY. Probably solve your problem.

Adjusting by merely tightening adjuster until a slight drag is felt seems to work only occasionally--and this is after the drums have been turned with new shoes installed (& hopefully tru-arced, when you can still find such a machine). Anything less, and the 1st suggestion seems to give, by far, greater results.

HTH,
Sam

Well Green Chevy no i did not bench bleed thought that was only for power brakes, i'm gonna try adjusting them {AGAIN} First, then if i need to start all over with bench bleeding i will

Re: HELP!!! i can't stop!

I might be late to the party, but did you bleed the brakes in the right order?

Usually done as longest line first (Pass rear,Driver rear, Pass front, and driver front)

I can't remember why, But I remember my dad teaching me this when I was a kid.

Re: HELP!!! i can't stop!

Bench bleeding works for both power and manual...all it is in Uncle Matt telling Aunt Dorthy to push the brake pedal to the floor while he has the bleeder screw opened. Have you tried pumping the brakes while you stop? Also...does the pedal seems to have alot of travel...like you can almost push it to the floor?

Re: HELP!!! i can't stop!

Does your pedal get better when you have the ebrake on?

TJ's Chevy 02-20-2015 04:26 PM

Re: HELP!!! i can't stop!

Yeah if you have to pump it that normally means you either don't have enough fluid, air in the system, or the adjustment is to loose. :chevy:
