Steering column interchange
I want to put a tilt steering wheel from a fixed one on the 79. Do all columns interchange from 73-87? Also I bought one of those steering wheels from a early 80s S10, the horn button is all that needs changed right?
thanks http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxNj...U2qtA/$_57.JPG |
Re: Steering column interchange
they do but the "swapped in"lower shaft prob needs to be used with it
Some do have different rag joints. And of course the later years have more power control wires.ie wipers/dimmer. |
Re: Steering column interchange
They are not a straight swap physically due to intermediate shaft changes as stated. The wiring is similar on things like turn signals, but the connectors change every few years or so, but can be repinned easily with a pick tool. It's best to pull from the same year if you want an easy swap. If not, be prepared to do some modifications.
As far as the horn button, the steering wheel is all integral. The only reason to change the button is if you need a GMC button or something. Otherwise, just feed the connector through the hole on the new wheel and plug it in. Looks exactly like the GMC wheel I got for my '74 from a 90's C1500. |
Re: Steering column interchange
Great thanks, that helps a lot. I cant wait to change to a tilt, right now the steering wheel basically sits on my legs.
