Thinking about cutting my dash...

I want a new CD player stereo in the truck, but I don't really want to cut the dash. I am thinking about building a center console for it. What other options do I have? What do you guys have?

Longhorn Man 08-28-2003 11:46 PM

I have a cut dash.
It's not like it is a GTO Judge.

here is what I did...put the head unit in the glove box, and I use a remote control so I don't have to lean across the cab while driving. I covered the hole in the dash with a radio delete plate I bought complete with clips and shipping for $13. This pic is also showing off my glove box light, thanks again Andy!

DOON"T DO IT, there is other ways, remote cd changer, in the glove box, I like the console idea, thats just my opinion

Longhorn Man 08-29-2003 12:02 AM

You know, i kept that pic the first time you posted it for future addvertising on these pages...but I never noticed the radio sitting there.

I did cut the dash, I doubt that I will ever put a car stereo with knobs in my truck.

Saw this- not mine, but cool. I wouldn't want to have to open my glovebox everytime I wanted to listen or change the station..... I like the console idea.

Tufconsole- not a bad choice unless you have a bench seat.

Don't cut!! This is a Kenwood KRC 3006 am/fm/cassette/cd head unit w/shafts (no cutting) and a KDC-C712 10 disc changer.
Sounds great and installs without cutting. Just mount the changer under the seat and you have 10 disc's to keep you happy. Ive had this unit for about 10 years and the changer for about 5. It isnt one of those FM units. It actually is controlled with the radio and has a C/D function. I think its something like 45 watts but it has the RCA outputs for you guys that want bad hearing like me.... This was my option to cutting!
:D :D :D :D :D  :D :D :D

i was going to keep mine uncut but my wife got me an awesome cd player for father's day so i cut it up. i like it much better. i since put the new cd player in my now daily driver camaro and am going to put the older cd player in the truck. it fits in with the styling better.

Chevelle454 08-29-2003 08:29 AM

I like that idea with the shaft style radio and CD changer. Where can I find a new shaft style like that of good quality(sony, kenwood, pioneer)?

I say cut it. After all, this guy did!

CPNE 08-29-2003 09:20 AM

But let's revist an earlier statement you made...

Quote:

I will never be selling it. It has been in the family since new. I don't really care which way would be worth more, I just don't want to totally ruin a good truck by doing something stupid.
You don't want people saying "I'm with stupid" do you? I think you've already addressed your quandry.

To address your last question, any of the vendors on the board can supply you with a perfectly adequate stereo without cutting the dash.

The acoustics in these rigs are far from good, so the argument about better quality/features with a DIN style is really pointless IMO.

Classic Heartbeat 08-29-2003 11:24 AM

We have several sterio's available in our website that you can install without cutting your dash and control 6 and 10 cd changers placed in remote locations in your cab. They look great also. Here is a link:

The one Wes has is the same unit as the one I have but the mfg removed the "KENWOOD" NAME AND PLASTERED THE BOWTIE AND CHANGED THE KNOBS. Good unit! I like the knobs. I paid something like 4175 for mine and the 10 disc that has a direct cable, not the FM modulator was about $200. Mine can be had through the Chutchfield Co if you can live without the Bowtie.
Just make sure if you buy one, you get the one that is directly connected to the head unit and not the FM modulator. Ive had one of those and Id rather listen to AM radio than one of those. They drift about every 4 or 5 miles.. Just my opinion

FRENCHBLUE72 08-30-2003 11:11 AM

Cut it !!!!!!!! UNless the rest of the truck will be bone a$$ stock..Once you alter one thing from stock it's to late to call it a stocker!!!!

Mudder 08-30-2003 12:05 PM

What is there to think about? Just make sure you cut it the right size. There can be no second chances. :)

DanoDMano 08-30-2003 12:26 PM

I love it when the Sawsall and the torch images come out!!
That is what pushed me over the edge to cut mine, and I am totally happy with it. Unless you are completely restoring your struck, then what is the harm.

I have the utmost respect for those who want to maintain there truck in its original restored state, but if you are not.... Then may the hacking begin. (carefully though...):D

Phillip Johnson 08-30-2003 04:13 PM

Measure once, cut twice, and its still too short.......
