Re: 283 oil filter adapter ...which is best?

It's been too many years for me to remember brands, but the first one I ever used on my 283 back around 1975 actually cracked and fell off the engine (taking the filter with it) after about a year of service. The first I knew I had a problem was when the rods started knocking. I looked down and saw zero oil pressure.

It wiped out the rod bearings on the crank but didn't hurt the engine. I got really lucky and picked up a 10 under crank, and set of 10 under bearings, and slapped it back together with no additional problems. I don't remember clearly, but I'm pretty sure I went back to the bolt on metal cartridge canister.

My spin on adapter weeps oil even with a new o ring. So was thinking

I been changen the canisters out since the late 60's and haven't had any more trouble than the canisters leakin. just put em on with loc tight and don't tighten to tight. the spin on are 10 times easier to use and find. those old canisters are a mess. Little tip my buddy does is put a tie fitting in the oil pressure line so we have a oil light and a gauge. he lost a pickup tube and had the music wide open if he hadn't seen the light he wood have lost the motor.

One of the adapters I used, requires you use your stock piece (the one you pictured) underneath, otherwise, it will warp when you tighten the bolts and cause a leak.

make sure that you use the correct length of bolt when you install the transmission when you switch to a spin on filter adapter. If you use to long of a bolt in that spot it will Crack the filter adapter

Its been OK since 1996 but had the filter vibrate off twice. I didn't double check the tightness so it was kind of my fault. I check it about once a month
