Changing axles, front dana 44

I'm rebuilding my front Dana 44 axle. I have 1972 D44 with the small u-joints and will be installing the 1973 and up larger u-joints axles. I see there is differences in the axles where the stub axle inserts into spindle and there isn't a machined shoulder on the longer axles for a slinger, plus If I understand right, I have to use this Spicer kit, 706527X instead of seals. The question, can someone offer some insight on how this will go together. I see and think I understand how it will go together. Just not 100% sure.

Thanks

Wow! For a bunch of off- roaders, I figured this would be a rather common exchange. So, this what Im looking at: On the stub shaft, it gets the metal slinger installed, the V-seal fits on the shoulder wear the metal slinger is pressed onto, seal lip facing the spindle and then the plastic spacer on the shaft. Question, is there a seal that fits oil/grease seal that is pressed into back of spindle? On the 72 models there is a seal.

- Large washer with the V goes inwards towards the ujoint
- Smaller seal goes behind the roller bearing with the V towards the ujoint

If your spindle uses the roller bearing the little black seal has to sit behind it but people either don't drive the bearing deep enough to do this or just don't add it.

If the bearing isn't deep enough just get a socket that fits the edge of the bearing and tap it down deep enough.

You can see hear what I'm referring to:

I just did all this on my 74

On my D60, the seal used to seal the back side of the spindle is actually part of the axle assembly. It's just a rubber seal that slides over the stud shaft before installing the spindle. Sorry, been a while since I messed with a D44

Dave,
i use the 73 up axles on all my trucks but you need to use the spindles from the 73 up too. 73 up are machined on the inside to accept the rubber flapper dust seal, your 72s aren't machined since they use a "pound in" seal. if you have any ????? shoot me a call and i'll explain it more better. i talk much better than i type;)

Thanks Jerry! that is what I was thinking, but I haven't had the time to do more research to verify. I will give you a call this afternoon. D/

Re: Changing axles, front dana 44

Finally got this completed, not a lot of info out there to ensure all the parts is on-hand to make the change over. It was rather easy, so here is the parts numbers and some explaining:
Dana Shafts:
Long: 27902X
Short: 27901X
Outer stub axle: 41677 (2ea)
Slinger: 36364 (2ea) – Pressed onto Outer Stub Axle
Seal Kit: 706527X (2ea) Dust seal rides on Slinger shoulder, thin side facing spindle.
U-Joints: 5-760X (2ea)
Spindles: 706528X (2ea) 1973 – 1976 spindles. You have to use these because the inner surface is machined smooth, polished for seal kit. See Jerry Moos explanation ^^.
Bearings: Set-37 and Set 45 (each side)
Hub Seal: 422380 (each side)
