Tilt Steering Column on eBay..

I found this column on eBay from an old thread on here, just wondering what I would have to fab up to actually make it functional on my 62 c10.. I am going with a automatic floor shift..

Any advice would help, I don't want to pay for a $600 tilt column.. I also know the saying 'you get what you pay for' but I just want it to be functional and do it's job for cheap.

Thanks

You'll need an intermediate shaft from a 69-72 (maybe later) to connect the column to the steering box. I used the original firewall clamp on my 64, and used a HD hose clamp on the interior side. you'll need to redo the turn/horn wires from the column to the harness since different connectors are used.

Thank you, I should've given more info, I just bolted up my 72 front crossmember swap with the power steering pump (haven't figured the mounting for the pump yet though) and I'm doing a whole wiring harness swap. I think it's the American Auto Wire.

Re: Tilt Steering Column on eBay..

I used an 70's GM column. I adapted it to my 65 steering shaft by cutting the shaft and grinding it into a double D. I used a Flaming River U-joint DD x splined to link it to the steering column.

Many chinese made tilt columns are not safe for use. The factory GM columns employ a failsafe joint that will not leave you without steering. Other name brands like Ididit and Flaming river use laboratory certified and serialized construction methods that are safe.

I bought a "pro-header" brand and then asked the importer if they employed a safe design. He acted interested in my email, but then probably found they were unsafe, because he stopped responding.

If you have a V-8, Bills Bracket company makes a good power steering bracket for a late 70's pump with a bolt on pulley. Speedway Motors sells this stuff. It is all I use.

If you have decent electrical skills, you can save a ton of money by buying a marine(boat) style fuse block and then just lay in your own new wires.

I put a 70's van tilt column in my 65 and I keep it in the reg steering position and never really tilt it. Go figure.
