speedo / odometer

I have a 56 truck that the speedometer works but the odometer does not. Any ideas on how to fix? I thought they were tied togather and both would or would not work. Thanks.

Re: speedo / odometer

The speedo is driven by a cable that spins a magnet, while the odo is gear driven off the same cable. Since the speedo works, you know the cable is good.
My guess would be a stripped gear on the odometer.

I have the same problem, my odometer has stopped too. Mine stopped when it got to a place where several of the digits should have rolled up. Unfortunately the only way to fix it is to remove the cluster, remove the speedometer, and repair or replace it.

Re: speedo / odometer

unfortunately i've had my speedo cluster apart many times over the past year
no magic in there, other than the speedo itself :D
the odometer is a couple of gears and the numbered head

there are a couple of ways the odometer could stop working without any damage to the gears
there is a clip that holds the long brass gear in that is most likely your problem
take it apart and look at what has slipped out of place

i reset the odometer to the actual miles on my truk since the rebuild

there is also a member on here TBONE1964 that does speedo repair
i sent a speedo head to him for calibration
he lives in juntion city oregon and may be close to you

but... other than calibration the speedo/odometer is pretty simple :D
i thought i was being smart when i bought a new one when i rebuilt truk
cheap offshore junk is all there is available, i went thru 4 different new speedos before a member sent me an old head and i had it calibrated

In that case I'd be checking out the cable.
