5 Lug Conversion

I swapped the front of my 69 over to 5 lug no problems at all now I am going to do the rear.I was told to get axles out of a 71 up and they would work. They are about3/4" to long on each side are the backing plates the same disc versus drums what am I missing here?Does any one know if the axles are the same from a 74 Your help is mucho appreciated once again:lol:

I don't know if the 74 axles are the same, but I used the longer axles (from a 71, I think). There was about 9/16" of a gap. The shoulder for the bearing was long enough on the axle, however. I found that a 74 drum closed the gap perfectly between the 69 backplate with the longer axles. This drum is for a 2-3/4" pad, but I have the 2" pads on the 69 backplate. There is a picture of it on my website....

I have just gone through this. At some point in 1970 GM went to a wider rear end hence the longer axles. This is the case 1/2 ton 12 bolts for sure. I was lucky enough to have the wider rear. Good luck.
