Need some help with power steering pulley and brackets
 

This is kind of a mess, so here we go…..

Sometime during the life of my truck there was engine swap with the donor being 1975 vette, plus at some point someone added power steering. The pump pulley is not proper aligned and it appears to me that the brackets are not the correct ones for this engine.

Please take a look at the pictures and provide ideas of how to fix this.

After several hours (and several purchases of brackets) at the salvage yard looking for parts to convert my '69 C15 to power steering, I found purchasing an aftermarket bracket to be the best course. Wound up with the March Performance Power Steering Brackets #20112

Worked well and looks good. There is a spacer/collar that should go from the top tab into the head of your current set-up.

I think the power steering bracket you are using should be mounted lower , I believe the holes in the block you are using now is for a driver side ALT set up , I never saw a GM power steering pump set up high like that

I could be wrong but something to look in to.

I suspect that the PS pump I have is from a 305 with a short water pump, and that someone rigged it to work with the long water pump that is on the engine. I forgot to mention that only one grove is used (ie only one belt) on this setup.


Can any provide pictures of a factor setup for a 69-71 350 CID?

Definantly not a V-8 power steering bracket, V-8 brackets mounts low on the block not to the head and manifold. I'd scan the junk yards for a short waterpump equiped power steering bracket.

Not the best pic but in the middle pic you can see how low the stock mount is in comparason.

Newer Saginaw pump supposed to be a two belt system. One belt for alt,water pump and crank. Second belt goes from crank to ps pump. Had similar setup on an 79 Malibu with a small block it had an actual steel spacer in there. I think that is another completely different bracket hooked the exhaust manifold stud as well. Do a search for Alan grove components tons of brackets for anything there.

Update.

I took the advice of Money Pit and contacted Alan grove components. Long story short my setup is a "hodge podge". They were a great help and recommended that I get pictures of my PS pump to help select the correct bracket kit.......

Unfortunately my pump doesn't have the rear mounting holes. So now I'm searching for a pump..... At this time I have a lot more questions than answers.

Basically what pump do I need for a setup w/o AC..... Any Suggestions of model number and source to getting a new pump?

My stock power steering bracket on the 350 in my 1972 GMC bolts to the top left engine mount.

Just get a power steering pump for the year of your truck.

Also I noticed you have a snapped off bolt in one of the cylinder head holes on the drivers side.

Ok so here is a exploded view of a 1975 corvette power steering pump and bracket assembly picture, the pump is a Saginaw part number is 6178 b and the bracket part number for summit racing is TFF-6504A

Now on a side note you will have to figure out what gear box you have and make or find the pressure line , the return line is kind of universal to a degree.

The weather has been a bit crappy out so I just got around to snapping a pic of my set-up. The lines are a bit jacked up because I bought the wrong pressure line. The next one will go under the pump. Finding everything I needed was a pain, even stuff I bought new. I'm pretty happy with this mount and doesn't look half bad. Sad thing is, right now, it looks like lipstick on a pig.

csmitty, whos bracket are you using. Where did you get it from. Im about to go to power steering also and need the mounting bracket.

I'm looking at using the Alan Grove 402L bracket set for my PS pump. Unfortunately I will need to get a replacement pump since mine doesn't have the rear mounting holes.

As Gary notice I do have a bolt snapped off in the head.....and my guess it's really stuck! Which I think the bolt is the root cause of why my PS pump is mounted so weird.

I got it from Summit, but it can also be ordered straight from the manufacture, March Performance. They have brackets for power steering w/ short and long pumps, for the R or L, as well as alternators.

The biggest problem I had was finding the right belt that would get tight before the pump began touching the frame. Once I got it worked out, I haven't touched it since. Wish all the issues on her were that easy to fix. After going to the yard and getting parts, I found I could have ordered the steering box, pump and brackets for less than $300 thru Summit. Oh well.

Here are just a few of the brackets I tried to use. Some are GM metric and some are Chevy SB 1 gen.
