Anyone running a carbed LS 5.3 or 5.7??
Any advantage to this? Found a deal on a controller and intake and the LS's are becoming cheaper but don't know about without the EFI

I have an LS1 and thought about it. Decided to stick with efi. It's going in a 49.

Pretty sure it ends up costing more to put a carb on it than to set it up to run the efi you can get the wire harness cut down to the bare minimum you need and computer flashed for like $400 from 150tunes.com and a fuel pump for like $200

Re: Anyone running a carbed LS 5.3 or 5.7??
Thanks Iowaboy! That was a great writeup he did. I would not even be considering this if I didn't have a line on a low mileage 5.3 ($500) and and msd LS1 controller kit and manifold ($400) If this will bolt directly to my 700r4 I think it's the way I will go

Glad I could I help. Make sure to check the LSx swap section too. (Where I got the link) That area has plenty of info too.

Easy-peasy. Just add fuel and go. Check out my "Popeye" thread.

Re: Anyone running a carbed LS 5.3 or 5.7??
Not to be controversial but I'd think you would loose a large percentage of the total performance of the LS engine by going to a carb Plus from what I can see it's going to take a bit over 1000 bones to do the conversion. That includes the intake, timing control module and then add a valley plate on top of that.

A 700R4 will bolt to a LS, but it you wont use all the mounting bolts and you need this kit. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/LS1-En...DisplayId=5070 There is also a kit for the TV cable mounting that Holley sells. Dont have that link at the moment. Smitty |
Re: Anyone running a carbed LS 5.3 or 5.7??
Mr48chev -Not controversial at all. I'm no expert, so what i'm going to say is just based upon my own research because i'm going down this route.
I wouldn't say its performance (i mean power/HP) but more driveability, i.e. carb vs. FI. And in that case I would say that would as true as having to dial in any carb. Financials...whew...you aren't kidding. In my case, i got a pretty good deal on a '02 5.3L long block out of a tahoe. But I needed the controller and the intake and i'm looking at the aftermarket TBI injection from Holley, FAST, edelbrock, etc. and that's probably going to come in at $2k. All told everything being even i'm a little north of $3k for powerplant. So a SBC long block with a decent top end vs. building up the LS...I felt it was a bit of a wash. Now if I was to do it over, i'd LOVE to find a 5.3L w/the harness, ecm, and transmission out of a wreck but not on this build. But as I began, your right, its not the most economical and not being contraversial at all. I figure this plus the suspension so far are the biggest cash sinks and needed some planning. |
Re: Anyone running a carbed LS 5.3 or 5.7??
Iowa....before buying FAST, Holley etc., check out FItech. Several guys on here are installing with good results and the system is very reasonably priced. Here is one install as an overview. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=653268
I haven't done the math for carb vs factory efi cost on an LS. Is there that much savings? My personal preferance is the solid driveability of the fuel injection. |
Re: Anyone running a carbed LS 5.3 or 5.7??
AD- Thanks I did look at the FI tech system and will keep and I on that system. In fact I think it made Holley a little nervous as it looks like they announced a similar system at SEMA.
Apache Mike- No to bogart your thread  I know you asked about a carb but if you would think about the FI we're talking about you also would need to change out your fuel delivery system as well ( pump, filters, returns, tank etc) which also adds cost. Something to think about. At the end of the day, as history has proven, with enough time, money and effort, we can send a man to the moon! It just depends if its in your time money and effort. |
Re: Anyone running a carbed LS 5.3 or 5.7??
Iowaboy: Bogart away! It's all more information that is usable. Can't complain about thar
Mr 48Chev I wouldn't consider this if I didn't have a line on a controller witth intake for around $450 (seller is at $450, I offered $400) Intake , controller, timing chips, wiring. But i know there is more to the swap than just drop it in and go |
Re: Anyone running a carbed LS 5.3 or 5.7??
Some great info here. I have been casually looking into an LS at some point on a project, but never considered running one without EFI.
