Heater Box Hardware help
Hey I am going through my pail of hardware and I can't remember what the proper hardware is for securing the Outer and Inner Heater boxes to the firewall. It has been too long since I took it apart and I have lost some of the pictures I took. So help me out. What is the screws used and any pictures would be a bonus. Thanks for the help, Jeff.

1/4" speed nuts for the studs and I think #10 or #12 hex head sheet metal screws for the others. Here is a picture of what they look like. There is one screw missing in the picture. LockDoc |
Re: Heater Box Hardware help
Ok. I found those in one of the cups. What about the inner box. Is the screws coming out through the firewall holding it in place similar?

Re: Heater Box Hardware help
the bolts on the inside look much the same as the ones that bolt the outer box to the firewall. You also need the 3 little push clips (sorry no pics) that attach the "heater controll cables' to the flapper doors, I lost two of mine and could not find a replacement and ended up using 2 small zip ties to secure the heater control cables to the flapper doors.

Here is what the clips look like. They are the same on both ends of the cables. This is the tool I use to get the clips off of the posts. Just work your way around the post pushing up on the inside and they will come off without breaking them. LockDoc |

Leon. Good tip but too late for me. I already broke a few.
I bought some new I found on ebay. Hope they are the correct size. |

These are the four bolts and nuts that mate the heater and a/c boxes.

Re: Heater Box Hardware help
My old truck has been sitting for years, if I want to go in and just check the heater box for critters, and rats nests, what's the best approach? It's an AC truck. Do i open the outside part or go under the dash and open it?

Edit: Not sure if the A/C trucks have the same thing or not. I've never had a complete one, just bits and pieces. You may be able to clean the whole system out from the inside on those. LockDoc |

Re: Heater Box Hardware help
Hey, having to replace heater core also, (pretty sure its first time and I have same screws/nuts that LockDoc posted picture of, 1 screw missing, till I read this I thought the long one was something stuck on sometime, now am wondering same thing, supposed to be 2 long ones and where do they go? The long screw has 3/8 head, 3 short ones are 7/16. Anyone shed more light on it? Thanks! PS, pretty sure they are #12 metal screws, Im going to try 1/4 inch first, due to wear thinking it might be a good fit...

AC or non-AC? I think they have a different number of fasteners.
Mine were #12's and I had to hammer and dolly the sheet metal flat to get them to tighten up properly. |
Re: Heater Box Hardware help
Non-a/c, yes, another reason Im going to use 1/4.

Re: Heater Box Hardware help
I would run the 1/4" screws in before installing the box just to make sure they thread in nicely before hand. The tabs on the boxes aren't very stout and it's pretty easy to break one. It doesn't take much torque on the screws to hold the box down and if I'm trying to power an oversized screw in normally I'll break something.

Re: Heater Box Hardware help
Yes, before box goes on, 2 tabs broke/were broken when I got the box off, JB weld and they seem solid so far haha, stay tuned...
