Need Gear Vendors OD Dimensions
1 Attachment(s)
I know there were a couple of the Squarebody group that had GV OD units in their trucks. I looked on their website but don't see the dimensions to get an idea if one of these units will fit under my truck w/o a domino effect. They list the tailhousing assembly circled in yellow @ 12.25" (TH400/mech speedo app) but don't list the dimensions of the other section circled in red.
This could possible interfere w/my exhaust crossover and/or exhaust flanges. Does any have the length for the adapter portion in red? |
Re: Need Gear Vendors OD Dimensions

A friend has a new one and about to install it, that was from the adapter to the rear seal.

Re: Need Gear Vendors OD Dimensions
So that's those two pieces combined, and it replaces the 4" tailshaft?

On the ones I've installed, shortening the driveshaft is a must, and sometimes changing the exhaust around if you have an X pipe. Sometimes floor mods are needed in some cars as the tunnel gets a little tight back there on some models. |

Re: Need Gear Vendors OD Dimensions
My 83 C20 has a GV unit but I have a SM465 granny so the adapter is different. Driveshaft must be shortened and rebalanced - that balancing is critical or you will get a bad vibration.
|
Re: Need Gear Vendors OD Dimensions
I knew the driveshaft had to be cut & re-balanced. It was the closer inspection of the length that surprised me. Might re-think the 4l80e....

Re: Need Gear Vendors OD Dimensions
Here are some photos of the GV unit on my Suburban.

Re: Need Gear Vendors OD Dimensions
So is the GV unit eorth it or should an owner switch to a 4l80?

Re: Need Gear Vendors OD Dimensions
Visually, that has more bulk to it vs what I saw from the dimensions pic on their website. What is your buddy's specific app? Mine is a th400/mechanical speedo so I wonder if that's part of it?
|
Re: Need Gear Vendors OD Dimensions
The unit is not bulky. However, the length combined with the NV5600 transmission and NP205 transfer case creates quite a short drive line.

Re: Need Gear Vendors OD Dimensions
I believe they have 2 different pans as well.

Re: Need Gear Vendors OD Dimensions
If you read the GV website you will find that they say adding a GV to an overdrive transmission will not increase fuel economy, just create a better towing experience.
