1981 c20 air conditioning click
My 1981 Chevy c20 is making a clicking sound every 5 seconds or so when the ac is turned on. It also sounds like more energy is being pulled from the engine when it is clicking. The ac also takes for ever to get cold. I just refilled the freon if that helps at all. Any input of what the problem could be would be a big help. -Thanks!

Re: 1981 c20 air conditioning click
It sound like the clutch is probably what is clicking. You probably are still low on Freon if it is taking for ever to get cold. Do you have a gauge to see how much Freon is in the system???

The only gauge I have came with the can of refrigerant and I filled it to wear it said to. The clutch is only spinning for maybe 3 seconds and then it turns off for five. It will do this the entire time it's on.

Re: 1981 c20 air conditioning click
Yeah that definitely means the system is low. The compressor will stay engaged once there is enough refrigerant in the system. The low pressure switch protects compressor from being damaged from to low of refrigerant

Re: 1981 c20 air conditioning click
The system could also be overcharged and the high side switch is kicking off the compressor. You're best bet is to get a set of manifold gauges and see what the high and low side of the system is doing.
