Washer Pump

Has anyone repaired a washer pump on an 81 and up square? My wiper motor works fine but the pump appears to be integral and not repairable. Do i need to buy the whole assembly?

Re: Washer Pump

Trico makes a replacement pump that bolts to the motor. I've never used one but I believe it's not gear drive like the original.
Trico # 11-515

It is possible to get most if not all the parts to re-build the gear drive pumps but they were never the most reliable pieces.

Re: Washer Pump

I think you are correct. As I recall, I replaced the original wiper motor mostly because the pump was not working. I have replaced the plastic parts on the end of the pump before but that never got the pump working. I think I will just try to rig up a universal pump and see if that will fire up off the stock push button on the wiper knob.

Re: Washer Pump

I believe the Trico 11-515 isn't a new gear drive unit. It's an electric pump setup to mount in -place of the gearbox and mechanical pump.

Re: Washer Pump

How would that Trico pump mount? I don't see how the stock pump could be removed, since it is integral with the wiper motor assembly - not detachable like the 73-80 pumps.

Re: Washer Pump

Also, when you push the pump button on the windshield wiper switch, does it send an intermittent signal to the pump mounted on the stock wiper motor, or is it continuous power of a set duration? If I use the wires to the stock pump and attach them to the universal motor, do I have to keep the button depressed to get a squirt of water, or does one press of the button give me a predetermined duration of power to the pump?

hatzie 03-22-2016 09:12 PM

Re: Washer Pump

The button is continuous. Power till you let go. The geartrain and cam provided the pulsing action and timer.

I got a $15 universal washer pump from AutoZone. I had a little trouble identifying which wire was hot and which one was negative (ground) since my Chilton manual did not show the proper wire colors for my 83. (It turns out that on my truck pink is negative and yellow is hot.)

After wiring in the new pump and rerouting the washer lines, the pump would fire up but not pump any fluid.

So... after checking everything again I pulled the cap off the reservoir and blew out the lines.

DOH !!!

The short piece of tubing from the cap to the screen pickup on the other end was worn out at both ends, which prevented the hose from getting adequate suction, which meant that no fluid was getting to the pump. I replaced that piece of hose and it pumps very well now.

At least I don't have to listen to the "clunk, clunk, clunk" when the stock pump cam does it's thing.

While I was under the hood, I rerouted the power supply to the relay for the supplemental electric fan from the secondary start battery to the primary battery since I am not currently using the secondary battery.

Re: Washer Pump

Glad you got it going. Too bad they integrated the motor so tightly after 1980. I remember reading somewhere that you could use a 78-80 motor on the later cabs... Maybe I'm having a senior moment too.

Circuit 93 is actually White but I bet 33 years have turned it yellow.
Pink is ground from the switch.
Chilton is a one size fits all diagram that's mostly almost but not always correct. The 1983 GM Light Truck wiring diagrams PDF in the 73-91 RTFM link below has the correct colors. I thought you'd have a hard copy.

Trico # 11-515 is the whole pump assy. http://thumbs1.ebaystatic.com/d/l225...GnjIFAsFaA.jpg

but you can take your cover of just pop straight out ward take your
pump chamber out check the O ring if it wore out not making seal for suction.

Re: Washer Pump

73-84 GM wiper motors get ignition voltage as soon as you switch the ignition to the run position. The switch grounds the Low, Hi, and Wash circuits.

Since the operation grounds come from the switch I don't believe the ground strap is needed in operation unless GM used it for additional RF noise suppression.

Does the Trico 11-515 actually fit the 81-84 wiper motors?

Re: Washer Pump

The pump cover comes off, but the pump itself is attached to the motor assembly via a metal base crimped around the back. Earlier models I have owned had a pump removable with 3 screws, and I successfully replaced those pumps with stock GM pumps.

actually White but I bet 33 years have turned it yellow

Same thing happened to my teeth - must be the desert heat.

Re: Washer Pump

73-77 ground one of the three screws

Ground strap 78-84 W/Pump option on the motor. WO/ Intermittant ( delay ) 100 % sure

85-up WO/Pump on motor ( pump on bottle) not sure if they have the ground.

I be leave his was a 81

They pretty easy to work on 78-84 just do not loose the clip

How does adding a ground to the motor shell make any difference when the operation ground is coming from the dash?

Re: Washer Pump

This will help your wiper transmission to park in the right place.
If you have wiper that will not park after turning off the switch, there three places to look.
Switch some times, But most times it the Ground strap there if it got a good ground there, Then it's the parking cam (gear area).78-84 wiper W/Pump on motor WO/ Intermittant ( delay ) 100 % sure
Now this if your transmission is set up in the right place to start and or wiper arms mounts(this includes trans mounts side arms) are not striped.

Re: Washer Pump

The body ground could be an issue with parking position from 1973-1977 where there was no Park ground from the switch.

The wiper motor gets Park ground from the switch on Circuit 97 starting in 1978. The 78-91 wiper motors are not dependent on body ground for function. If they are not parking it's a problem in the motor internal switching.

I think I need a new washer pump motor as its about as loud as a fully loaded C5 Galaxy taking off when I need to wash the windshield .

Re: Washer Pump

Ok then I have to re-install the wiper check it out maybe I getting the motor's mixed up with the problems each one had.

Re: Washer Pump

81-87 pumps look the same from the outside as the earlier pumps, but the 81-87 pumps are attached to the motor with a crimped metal base, not a screwed on metal base - at least that is the case with my 83. I guess you could retrofit a 73-80 pump to an 81-87, but I prefer my $15 solution. I have never had any luck with just replacing the plastic parts at the output end of the pump. As noted above, my only problem was a worn out pickup hose in the reservoir - I did not need a new pump, but I like my $15 pump better than the stock one.

Re: Washer Pump

The pulsing pump and jerking wiper arms aren't what you wanted from your windshield washer?
I just swapped on a junkyard 1985 up washer tank with the pump in the bottom. Not too concerned about original looking. It might be fun to get one of the 1 gallon washer bottles off something modern where it's down in the bumper with a long gangly snorkle and then stuff it under the battery tray.
