Leaf spring junk yard removal
Anyone have advice on taking leaf spring off in junk yard quickly and easily? I already tried bolts but U bolts are stuck solid. The eye bolts seem a little sketchy crawling under truck. The truck at j-yard is already lifted off the ground supported by rims. I just need one

Re: Leaf spring junk yard removal
Never done a junkyard removal, but at home I always just use a zip wheel on U bolts & shock bolts, bolt cutters on E brake cable & lines if not reusing them & once axle is out,zip wheel Center bolt & there's your leaves. A small generator would be your friend in the junk yard.Fighting wth old Rusted U bolts isn't much fun.

Re: Leaf spring junk yard removal
I just took my Kobalt cordless impact, breaker bar (just in case), and some PB blaster. I sprayed all of the bolts then walked around the yard looking for about 30 minutes. Cordless impact did the job, no problem.

Re: Leaf spring junk yard removal
Check with the yard on their power tool policy. Some don't care, others don't allow. All it takes is one idiot trashing several hundred dollars worth of body parts trying to recover a $10 emblem to make yards hate power tools.
Or you may get lucky and the yard has tools they will let you borrow. +1 on the penetrating oil. Even WD-40 will help. See if the yard will reserve the leaf pack for you and give everything a good soaking and come back the next day. Consider getting both sets. The sag on your existing set may be different then the JY set. |
Re: Leaf spring junk yard removal
Well I do have a ryobi sawzall and a impact driver that I could probably make work. Maybe I can sawzall the eyelet bolts at the shackles and hopefully impact is strong enough to get bolts off. I have a cracked spring on one side because someone decided to add lift blocks and the stress cracked leaf spring. I do need U bolts now that I think of it since the others are too long now. I will see how easy it is to get one off and if it is easy enough maybe 2.
