Re: alternator alignment
Put a washer on the bolts between the bracket and the block?

Re: alternator alignment
If you give us another pic with the alternator folded down with the belt off and top bolt out we might offer suggestions.
It might be a good time to upgrade and get one with a different mounting configuration. |

Think the bracket is on wrong side of altanator ear or is bent. Belt probably too short so po opted to flip sides.

Re: alternator alignment
Check out my thread on a similar topic, not sure if that's the same as your issue but appears to be.

Re: alternator alignment
I would elongate the bolt holes in the lower bracket where it bolts to the block and slide it forward.

Re: alternator alignment
You could use something like this

Re: alternator alignment
Looks like someone swapped in a new alternator from a car application. The only difference is the pulley on the alternator , you have the wrong one. You need the correct truck one that extends out further. Notice how the one pictured below is spaced out about a half inch , this is a heavier one piece pulley on a bone stock 1965 Chevy truck six. I would also correct that bolt on the top of the alternator to the adjusting bracket.

Re: alternator alignment
I can also add, the correct GM part number is 1958095 .

Re: alternator alignment
GM straight 6's used a 6 cylinder only alternator pulley. Rather than do a ton of mods it's best to find the right pulley. My 66's 292 had the alternator swapped out at some point and was setup like yours with the belt way off. I left it that way for years with no problems. haha But I did find a spacer pulley and put it on.

Re: alternator alignment
One thing I've run across on small block Chevy's, and a high-end shop had the same problem with a big-block Mopar: The high-end shop bolted the water pump housing to a Bridgeport and took material off.
After studying it on my SBC a while, I realized that the company that rebuilt or manufactured the water pump hadn't pressed the pulley flange on far enough. Take a piece of wood, lay it in the grooves and check the alignment of the crank pulley and alternator pulley. Then check the alternator and water pump, then check the crank and water pump. If you find the crank and alternator line up, the water pump pulley flange is the problem. Take the back cover of the pump off, support the shaft, and press (or pull) the pulley's mounting flange until it is in the right spot. Make a new gasket for the back of the water pump, and go merrily on your way. If it turns out to be the alternator is in the wrong spot, you've got to shim the bracket to the right location, or find one with the right bends in it. -Brad |

Here is another example of a 6 cylinder pulley. This is the stock one from my 64's 292 transferred to a new alternator.

Re: alternator alignment
You have plenty of threads on your pulley. Go to a good alternator rebuild shop, they have spacers in different thicknesses that will space your pulley out to align it up. Takes about 2 seconds to buzz off the nut and put the spacer / shim behind it. That's what I did, heck they didn't even charge me for it.
