12 bolt confusion
After breaking a drive shaft/u joint/yoke last week at the track I decided to open up the rear end and make decisions on what to upgrade. Inside I found a part number ydggm12p-3-30 on the carrier which is a Yukon gear and axle 500 dollar posi unit :metal:
The confusing part is that part number is for a car 12 bolt not a truck 12 bolt? So do I need a car ring and pinion or a truck ring and pinion? I know I need truck axles because of the larger bearing size but will the work with the car posi?? Honestly much like transmission I don't know anything about rear ends so any help would be great! Thanks Carter |
Re: 12 bolt confusion
There is a member here that figured out how to run car 12 bolt gears in a truck 12 bolt housing, so I imagine the carrier could be used as well? I just have not seen or heard of it before. Are you sure your housing is a truck 12 bolt and not a car 12 bolt?

Re: 12 bolt confusion
based on the rear cover shape I'm calling it a truck 12 bolt. It is defiantly not circular like the car 12. I contacted Yukon and they said a car 12 diff will not fit into a truck 12 because of the carrier offset. They said to get the pinion numbers to be sure what rear end it is.
What a pain in the but this turned out to be.. |
Re: 12 bolt confusion
Yes the carrier series breaks for a car 12 bolt are different than a truck. Here is some reading for you.
