grease fittings.?!?!?!?!
 

how many grease fittings are there on a stock 71 c-10 front suspension. i really need to know......i thought i knew how many but......i am not sure. and can you list the locations!

Here are the ones that i know of:

Upper and lower ball joints, wheel bearings (on the caps), all tie rod ends, the the bars that the A-arms pivot on. That is all i can think of now....any more that i'm forgetting?

Let's try again. 1 fitting at each ball joint. Total 4. 1 fitting each end of control arm pivot shaft. Total 8. 1 fitting each tie rod end. Total 4. 1 fitting drag link to pitman arm. 1 fitting drag link to idler arm. There you go. Good Luck.

You have zerks on your bearing dust caps yellow? Do you have bearing buddys on there or something?

I pulled off the rotors to get them turned and noticed that there were grease fittings on the bearing dust caps.

What is a bearing buddy? I just repacked the wheel bearings and smeared grease all over the spindle when i put it all back togethere....

No, it dosen't have those....just a cone-shaped rounded sheetmetal cap with a grease fitting on it. Hollow on the inside.

Nope. Someone added those. I'm not even sure how much they would help. No way to get the rear bearings (same short coming with the bearing buddys) and mainly, when you pump into your set up, you run the risk of damaging the rear bearing seal. The bearing buddys have a spring loaded plate that will move so you won't put pressure on the seal.

Repacking the bearings with fresh grease is a easy job anyway.

I've never seen zerks on those things. They are just caps to cover the nut and the bearing. I don't think the grease could even get to the bearing from the cap.
Must have been an "upgrade" by the previous owner.

It could get to the outer bearing, but not very effectivly.
The cap m,ay blow off before the amount getting to the bearings would be effective.

Doesn't the Idler Arm have one where it pivots at the frame? Not the drag link, but the other end. I know my '92 chevy has one. Easily missed, and usually the first to get loose in my experience.

Well, a quick rule of thumb I use while greasing the variouse vehicles at work that I am not too familiar with, if it moves, it probably needs lube.
So look at everything that moves, and you can't go wrong.

sounds like a farmer may have owned your truck yellow :) we used to have 1 dust cap for the wagons that we had put a grease fitting in to grease all the wheel bearings

so if i counted correctly there are --18-- zerks on a stock front end, and if i add my --4-- zerks on my front swaybar that would mean i have --22-- total.
i better go and see if i gto them all..!!!
