POR-15 On Aluminium ??
After reading the praises of POr-15 here, used it on rusted floor boards on 72 K10. One of my friends started using it on all of his old farm equip. and swears by it. Today he called and asked if POR-15 could be used on an old set of aluminum wheels, instead of powder coat? I do not know this answer, hoping someone here can help out. Thanks

Re: POR-15 On Aluminium ??
I think it is a bad choice

Re: POR-15 On Aluminium ??
As long as you properly prep the surface I don't see why it would be a bad idea. It holds up well but will fade in the sun without a uv inhibitor

Re: POR-15 On Aluminium ??
If I am not mistaken, Por-15 is a rust inhibitor, with the active ingredient of phosphoric acid. It would be a bad idea to put any type of acid on aluminum, as it will react and cause serious pitting.
For oxidized aluminum, a good polish (sanding for really heavy oxidation) would be ideal. It can be followed with paint, fresh anodizing, powder coat, or heavy coat of carnauba wax to prevent further damage. |
Re: POR-15 On Aluminium ??
POR-15® Metal Prep provides the best adhesion for POR-15® Rust Preventive Coating on any metal surface, including aluminum and shiny polished metal surfaces. Our simple process gently etches metal, creating an ideal anchor pattern for coatings such as POR-15® Rust Preventive Coating, while simultaneously leaving a zinc phosphate coating to insure chemical bonding of paint and steel. Avoid other preps that may leave harmful residues which prevent proper adhesion. After thoroughly degreasing your work piece, apply environmentally safe POR-15 Metal Prep to both neutralize any rust and etch any clean bare metal. This will allow better adhesion of POR-15® Rust Preventive Coating or any other coating. POR-15® Metal Prep is not caustic, corrosive, toxic or flammable.

APPLICATION OF POR-15® TO NEW METAL
For proper adhesion to aluminum, galvanized metal, and smooth steel surfaces, prep with POR-15® METAL-READYT Rust Remover/PrePrimer. Keep surface wet for 15 minutes, then rinse off with water and dry thoroughly. This process will leave a zinc phosphate coating on the metal and insure perfect adhesion. |
