disc brake bang for the buck
 

I'm getting ready to convert the the 70 to disc. It is 6 lug all the way around and want to know in your opinion, what is the best kit out there. ( not too expensive, but not cheap, easiest installation. what have you guys had good luck with? I have been looking at a classic performance kit.

I was checking earlyclassic site, but I did not see the 6 lug for our year. I saw 5 lug. Maybe I will give them a call.

You can buy all off the shelf parts yourself without a kit.
I wonder if it is cheaper that way.

I see you cut that one down into a short bed, if you haven't done so yet, remove the middle bed holes in the rail and the pocket underneath, dead giveaway it was cut down...

thanks Randy for the info. I have not removed the middle holes. I dont mind it being a conversion. I will keep all the weld lines showing.

I don't see anything wrong with cutting the bedsides down, I love the shorty's, I see a lot of people commenting on those middle stake pockets...and most that I see cut down they forget to remove those.

Let me ask you this, why are you changing to disc brakes? It wont stop any better than a properly serviced drum brake setup. Discs are better on successive stops because of heat and the drum expanding. You could save a lot of money by not converting and being happy with the drums...

SSBC has a kit on Amazon that doesn't require you change spindles or balljoints. I want to say it's coming through Summit, but backed by Amazon for customer service. And the shipping is included. They also have the complete kits with drop spindles, new hubs, and the whole shebang, for more money of course.
I'm looking at ordering my kit in a couple months, but I want to redo my bed wood first.

Converting because I want to go lower. So I was thinking drop spindles. Or should I just go airbags and leave drum brakes?

You'll be able to go lower with drop spindles, so if you're going that rout, go ahead and convert it to disc. Keep in mind that some kits aren't compatable with stock wheels, so make sure before you buy.

I would not use SSBC, my boss bought those for his square body and I was not at all impressed with the quality. I bought all wilwood for mine, great quality and fitment for a decent price

I did mine last summer, put on CPP's 6-lug disc kit, standard rotors/lines, love it. Installed power brakes at same time along with CPP's tubular upper/lower control arms since I had everything apart. Brakes really nice now. 1970 C10 SS w/402

Let me add I used CPP's 6370SWBK-6D with 2 1/2" drop spindles

Why not factory discs off a later unit? GM made millions of them and they've been thoroughly tested. There's no drop version of them, of course, if that's a requirement.

Aren't all of those kits the exact same GM parts just sold in kit form? Except willwood I think they are just GM parts.
Like I said I would price out collecting all the parts from summit (free shipping) or rock auto. You do need a set of brake lines though and for those you better have some good pictures of how they install in every area of the frame and crossmember or it will be a problem, I have read the kits are very weak in that respect and its really the hardest part of the whole job.

By hardest part I mean time consuming, confusing and easiest to screw up.
