compatible Rear end for 64'
Hey I know this question has probably been asked a million times but im confused on what can work and wont. I would like a rear end that doesn't require me to move the perches but thats not a must. I would like to find one that is 5 lug and have disc brakes. Im going to be going to the junk yard and need to know what to look for as in what years and types of trucks will have this. I dont mind having to relocate perches just need something same width. I sold my 12 bolt and yes I know it was mistake.

Re: compatible Rear end for 64'
The one in the 64 is a 12 bolt truck, strong! You can change the axles to 5 bolts.

Re: compatible Rear end for 64'
The easiest way to do what you want is to buy new axles (5 lug) from a supporting vendor for the 12 bolt you have, rebuild while your there and add disc brakes to the 12 bolt, hit up Captn Fab her on the forum on what to buy.
Oh, you will also need a new prop valve or master for disc/disc brakes too. |

Re: compatible Rear end for 64'
I would look for another 12 bolt and just update it. That would be your best approach.

Re: compatible Rear end for 64'
had a 62' frame then switched to 64' and sold the 62 rear end and bought a 96' caprice rear and sold it. Just a lot of bad decision making

Re: compatible Rear end for 64'
We have all done that.
So, find a 12 bolt from a 73-80? 1/2 ton truck and get Captn fabs coil rear mounts (you do have coils right?) then have someone or you cut the leaf mounts off and weld the coil mounts on. That will be the least expensive. Good luck! |
Re: compatible Rear end for 64'
no coils going to do airbag

Re: compatible Rear end for 64'
Ok but you HAD coils right?

Re: compatible Rear end for 64'
I have someone selling a 1973 dana 44 off a blazer could that work and how do they compaired to 12 bolt?
|
Re: compatible Rear end for 64'
A '73 K5 Blazer would have a 12 bolt in the rear and a Dana 44 in the front. This is if it is a 4x4.
I would go with a truck 12 bolt over a Dana 44 any day. A 8.5" truck 10 bolt isn't a bad differential either. Quote:

Re: compatible Rear end for 64'
Would a 1985 burb 2wd have 12 bolt or 8.5 and those be made to work without narrowing
|
Re: compatible Rear end for 64'
The last year for the truck 12 bolt was '82. So an '85 Suburban will have the 8.5" 10 bolt. It is 1.5" wider than the 12 bolt in your '64. Many people use the '71-'87 differentials under their '60-'70 trucks without issue. However it will depend on what rear tires you plane to run.
