Strange Shoe and Drum Wear
 

In May of 2015 I replaced all my breaks. From the shoes to the booster, even hard lines, everything was new except the drums, that I had turned.

I noticed in the last week or so that my brake pedal was moving farther before I stopped, so this morning I went and adjusted all the shoes.

Its a 61, so no auto adjust, and drums front and rear.

On 3 wheels, the shoes and everything just needed minor adjustments. But the drivers front was a different story.

The rear shoe is almost all the way gone, and the drum has 2 HUGE grooves in it. The grooves are probably from Rivets in the shoes.

Obviously I need to change the drum and shoes on this wheel, but what could cause this to happen to only 1 wheel? If it matters, the truck has always slightly pulled to that side when braking.... SLIGHTLY.

Rear shoe was the only one moving outward when brake pressure was applied. Has to be some sort of installation error - was the front shoe hung up on the backing plate somehow?

Thanks for that reply. That makes sense. Im going to get a new drum and new shoes in the next several days. I will double check that they aren't bound up somehow.

An old timer once showed me how to put a dab of white lithium grease everywhere the shoes contact the backing plates. I have also seen backing plates on very high mileage vehicles where the shoes over time have worn right through the backing plate in places where they make contact. Hopefully you'll find that it's something easy like that to fix.

A buddy saw my pics and is giving me the drums he took off his 66 for a disc swap. So that will save me a bit of money!

Ive had weird things like that happen when 1 side of a wheel cylinder starts hanging up. All of the pressure is diverted to the opposite shoe. Id pull the dust boot off and look for brake dust / mud in large amounts.

Good tip on the wheel cylinder. Its new, but ill check it for sure!

On the picture of the rear shoe it look's like backing plate is bent , has some bend's right in line of jack stand. This will cause misalignment of shoe and the right front brake will have better contact area and pull to right braking.

good eyes 1966shortwide. Ill have to look at that. Even though its been pulling to the left, its still worth checking!

When you take your brake shoes off look at your backing plates If they have groves where your brake shoes move back and forth.You need to wire feed and grind them down smooth Then put white lithem grease on all 3 pad that the brake shoes rest on.Make she you pivic bolt on top where you put all your springs is not bent.Remember to de arch your shoes so that they apply to the center of the brake drum then when you put more pressure the brake shoe flatten's out against the brake drum
