Mid Chasis Gas Tank
 

I needed a new gas tank anyway so I wanted to move it under the box. I did not want to mount it behind the axel because that is where I plan on putting the spare tire. Since I have the service box instead of a standard bed, this gave me room to put the tank in front of the rear axel.

A tank from a 1967 Mustang fit perfectly in this area, just needed a cradle to mount the tank to the frame. I welded a side filler neck onto the tank and ran the fill tube into the driver side storage bin. Finished it off with a magnetic fuel door and push through gas cap.

It will still many months before I drop in a pump and get the engine fired up, but one more task checked off the list.

Very nice job!

I have a 1963 short bed fleet side. I also have a 1965 short bed step side. I refuse to install a tank between the frame rails at the back of the bed because I want to keep my spare tire there (under the bed).

I've been kicking around the idea of putting a gas tank in the bed just behind the bed header panel. Basically, install a tank between two header panels at the very front of the bed. It would get the tank out of the cab but would only sacrifice about 1 foot of bed length. I think it'd be more easily accomplished in a fleet side bed since it is wider.
The tank would gravity feed just like the tank that is inside the cab. For a fleet side bed, you could even use the original tank since it will fit between the bed sides.
Just thought I would share my idea.

I also banged around the idea of putting the tank there.
As you all, I want to put my spare behind the axle.

My other thought was to go with one of those skinny spares rather than a full size tire.
