Hiding a multitude of sins! Spray Paint.
 

I don't know if I am the only guy that through the years decided it was easier to throw a coat of flat or satin black over something to dress up the engine compartment a bit, even over dirt and grime. Well as I get older and the 72 gets more valuable it is time to do it right, or at least better. So I have been working on the airbox first. After seeing a few restored, I see it is not black, it is more grey with texture like fiberglass, so I am using a product and scrapping all the old paint off while it is still in the truck.

I wanted to share with you some pretty good spray paint remover that is working quite well.

I spray it on and it softens the paint up and does not harm the plastic, or fiberglass that is under it, I use a scrapper and it peels right off, sometimes I have to use it a few times depending on how thick the coats are, but typically, spray, wait 15 min and scrape and it comes off in sheets.. Just an FYI!

That's good to know. Previous owner of my truck thought it was a good idea to spray everything, and I mean everything, under the hood with spraypaint. That's why I recently tore the front end down to repaint the firewall and inside fenders, etc....

I love this site! I started cleaning an air cleaner I recently picked up, step inside and log on to 67-72 and Bbamm! There is a thread on paint remover!

What air cleaner is that? Or is the picture misleading showing it notched around the brake booster?

This stuff worked pretty well and is non-toxic and not eating away at the parts the paint is stuck to. My air box that houses the evaporator came out very nice..

Wow! That looks great, good job! I know the cleaner helped but that isn't just a spray and wash job. Thanks for sharing the info and pics.

It's a custom air cleaner modification by a previous owner. Probably whoever added the 3/4 ton booster and master cylinder to my 1/2 ton truck. Which makes the brakes work TOO good. The rear will lock instantly if you jump on it.

When I got the truck. It looked like it had been cut with a torch and the part on the inside brazed back in backwards. I will try to get an inside pic, but it fits the normal air filter fine. I did straighten up the cut lines with a belt sander and worked on the brazed in part with a hammer, file, sander and added some bondo....so It looks much better than when I got it.
