Steering box options
Picked up a 95 regular cab stepside sport model 2wd.
Hate the steering feel. Loved the jeep grand Cherokee steering box in the chevelle. Felt perfect. Anyone found a similar junkyard swap for these trucks? Or maybe the jgc box swaps in? Ive been searching and only come up with the 454ss box. |
Re: Steering box options
Been searching for years for something new for my 98. They ain't out there. Everything is just re-sealed, maybe re-valved, but still original gears and slop as they don't make replacements. You just order new ones and keep swapping until you find one you like. sucks.

Re: Steering box options
I've got a 95 suburban 4wd, I run an AGR box on it and even with 35s I've always been happy with the feel. Granted a 2wd sport truck and a lifted suburban are two very different vehicles still just my .02 / aftermarket steering box experience so far

Re: Steering box options
Have y'all looked into the Red top box? they do more then just replace the parts, they add bearings and other things to tighten them up.. I got a 91 4wd Jimmy i'm going to check into getting one for.

Re: Steering box options
Red head steering? i hadn't heard of them before but its good to know of another company, like i said I've got the agr in my 95 with no complaints but also just installed a psc box in my 90 suburban build so i'll see how that one works out too

Re: Steering box options
From what I understand our trucks use a Saginaw 800 steering box and lots of cars used those. The most common fast ratio is 96-98 Grand Cherokee. Have not done this yet, but I have to replace some tie rods in the next couple of weeks and I want to swap the steering box at the same time.
PS. Doing a little research I found that you can buy a GM rebuilt unit with lifetime warranty from Scogging Dicky as well as other places. ACDelco 19321370 https://sdparts.com/i-24095698-acdel...4aAg7_EALw_wcB |

Re: Steering box options
yes it was Red Head not top. I hear they are the real deal to fix our issues. If i can drop $400+ for a radio, I can surely pay $300 for a part that makes driving a short Blazer safer.

Re: Steering box options
Cherokee swap doesn't work with 96+ trucks, steering column is different.

Re: Steering box options
An update on this. The ACDelco 19321370 DOES NOT fit the Suburban contrary to everything I have read. The casting is a #27 and the Suburban has a a casting number of 83. Same box, everything's the same except one of the mounting holes will not line up. Not sure but it is my impression that the trucks use the same box.
Totally ticked off too. I should have to caught but that of course I didn't till I put it in place. Now mine is torn apart and I have to order a new box. I gave it just ordered one from RedHead. At this point I don't care about the cost, I just want my truck back. |
Re: Steering box options
I always felt these trucks had a nice feel to the steering. What issues are people talking about, worn out boxes?

Mine has been modified and for a Suburban handles really well, very flat cornering but it took a lot of steering input on tight corners. So I fixed both at the same time. |
