Transmission Advice

I have a 1969 K20 with a 396, NP205, TH400. It has a 4" lift and I run 35's. It is not a garage queen and I use this truck and like the power and durability of what I have. I am now getting to a point where I want it more streetable without sacrificing the performance I have now. I was considering adding a gear vendors Over/Under Drive to the truck but now I am wondering if I might just be better off with a modern 4x4 transmission with overdrive. I want something that is tough and will stand up to off road but still allow me to take a long road trip without breaking the bank on fuel.

What advice do you have for me on this? I want something that can stand up to 450 - 500 HP and the torque requirements. What transmission/what do I need to convert over, etc. All opinions welcome and thanks in advance.

4l80e or nv4500.The gear vendors isn't cheap and your still left with a non-lockup transmission, although it would be the easiest to install.
Cheap-reliable-easy: you can pick two.
Decisions decisions.

4l80. Can be bought relatively cheap, and the controllers are cheaper now too. Plus not overly difficult to hook up to a 205.

4l80-e if you like auto . since you have a th400/205 your 205 should be 32 spline input . fairly easy to get adaptor for .

then look here for a great controler unit . www.usshift.com you want the quick 4 unit for the 4l80-e

kind of depends on how you do it .

lots of guys do a 2wd 4l80 to use the speed sensors in the trans and keep the 205 cable drive .

others do the 4wd trans and modify the rear t-case output for vss sensor to let the controler shift correctly in 4w low .

some add in a cable signal transducer and piggy back the cable on that still .

www.offroaddesign.com offeres the vss sensor mod option if you go that route .
