2 piece timing chain covers????
Do they leak? I am thinking about getting one off ebay for 15.00. They are good because you dont have to drop the oil pan to get at the cam, but they seem like they would leak. Has any one had experence with these?

I'm new here but I can answer your question...no they don't leak at all, they're great! the inner ring is bolted on with its own gasket, holding the pan seal in place, then the outside cover is bolted on with another gasket just like normal. 15 bucks is a steal...

I tried a Mr. Gasket two-piece cover on this engine and it leaked badly right at the bottom.
There was nothing to hold the spacer ring to the outer cover at the bottom. It appeared to be a design problem with no apparent fix. Here is a shot with the two-piece cover on just before I rolled the engine over and found the massive leak, |
Mike, that looks like a one piece cover to me...am I wrong? I had a Cloyes 2 piece and loved it...never leaked...but of course the cover set me back a little over $100, so it shouldn't have. :)

You might be right..............it has been too long since I did it! I did go through 3 different covers before I found one that works right. I do know what I said above happened........that two-piece leaked badly. I got the Mr. Gasket two-piece off eBay for $15 or so and it looked straight and all but it still leaked. |
Those cheap 2 pc ones will most likely leak. the sturdy aluminium ones are much better. I have milodon gear drives (one is erson brand but it''s exactly the same as the milodon one, just labelled differently) on my 2 corvette engines and I love them, combined with spring loaded roller lifter it just takes backing off the rockers and removing the cover to swap a cam.

i really didnt think it was all that big of a deal when i tore down my motor and removed the one piece and nothing fell out. you should go with a high quality 1piece

how fast are you guys going throgh cams?
taking the oil pan off isnt really that hard and if your cam is out anyway i wouldnt think you want to reuse the oil. what are the advantages of a 2 piece

Stan, from that point of view you're right, however some people (like me) change cams not because the old one got chewed up but to test something new, jsut to make an improvement (cam tech isn''t standing still, the lobes get increasingly more aggressive)

The advantage is not having to remove the pan or timing cover when/if you do change cams.
Another advantage is the cool factor. :D Some things we all do is not of any real benefit, but dayum, it sure is cool to say we have it or have done it. :) |

yea that is true, but when i pulled the timing cover on my 305 thats sitting in the shop floor i could put it back on without any trouble. i guess it wouldnt seat right or anything huh

i've noticed mention of a Mr Gasket timing covers, and their poor quality. when someone posts about one, the have already discovered their problem, they just dont realize it. Mr Gasket used to be decent stuff, but in my experiences more recently Mr Gasket ranks right up there with ProForm. its JUNK.

I went in for some flexplate bolts the other day @ NAPA and ask for ARP bolts. The guy behind the counter said "why don't you use Mr Gasket bolts?" I tried to be nice and just said "no thanks" Maybe I should take out my ARP rod bolts and replace them with Mr Gasket?!? |
