What to do
Last night was adjusting the valves and guess what #2 exhaust valve does not open as much like the rest. Flat lobe. Engine is a sbc 350 I replaced rings bearings gaskets I did a budget rebuild. To do it right I got to pull the engine out and do a complete tear down and cleaning. I also have a little 307 that came in the truck for some reason I want to build it the only drawback on the 307 it has a piston ridge which will need new over size piston more $$$. what should I do 307 or the 350. I would like a efficient v8 maybe 300hp. Both would get a set off heads from jegs or summit

Re: What to do
Any tricks on removing and installing the engine, truck has a sm465 transmission. I've done a buch of automatic transmission but never a manual

Re: What to do
I would definitely rebuild the 350 over the 307. 300 hp with a set of aftermarket heads will be easy with the 350. Check out some vortec heads. They’ll require a different intake, but they flow really well. Do your research first though, the factory vortec heads require some machining to take lift over .460. The aftermarket ones may not. A small cam and vortec heads would make more than the 300 you’re after. As far as R&R tips, I like to pull the engine and trans as a unit. To me it’s easier.

Re: What to do
If you can find one for a good deal, run a later vortec 350 block (880 casting). No more worries about a flat cam, and you get the good heads with it. In stock configuration it will move your truck along nicely.
You're looking at a rebuild anyway, this is a better foundation. |
Re: What to do
Totally agree on getting yourself a used Vortec style 350 as a starter for the build....
Better heads Roller style cam (no more flat lobes) One piece rear main oil seal As mentioned, you will need a different intake but the Vortec style 350 is the best choice by far... Have fun :chevy::chevy::chevy: |
