Help indentifiying my auto lock hubs on 73 K10

I'm not really sure what to call them so I didn't get much help using the search feature. I've got a 1973 K10 with auto locking hubs but they have 5 bolts not the typical 6 that I'm used to seeing. This is a weird truck, it's got a manual trans, but it's a 3 speed (no granny gear). Now I've come across this weird hub issue. Please enlighten me

ok, so in searching further it appears the auto hubs from 81-87 are 5 screw. So do I have a corporate axle up front?

i think you got your self a mutt boy :ito:

but yes there from a 81-up body group . they can fi the older dana 44 axle tho . so make sure you know what style axles you have before ordering parts .

good to know thank you. So one more question, when I buy manual hubs do I need the conversion nut kit? I guess I also need to find out which transfer case I have. I'll post pics shortly

i was just talking about that trans and t-case combo in another thread in the 4x4 section today .

thats a car 4 speed hooked to a np205 part time t-case . that combo is rare . i have seen a few online and 1 in person .

the np205 is a gear to gear part time case . solid as a rock units .

as for the nut conversion i swapped one set out years ago and didnt need it . so best to pull one off and if its the reg old 4 tab nut/washer/nut combo then your golden with just a set of lockouts .

i my self do NOT run warn hubs or most others . the way there designed if they fail they fail open / unlocked .

i prefer the old original spicer hubs or the newer yukon hubs that are a updated / combined best of both style spicer hubs in 1 best package . there a little more $ but great stuff .

The standard transmission in your 73 K10 would be a 3-speed steering column shift. I think someone converted your column shift to a floor shift. Pretty common back in the day. The only engine choices were a 250 six cylinder and the 350 V8.

The Saginaw 3 speed and Saginaw 4 speed look pretty close on the outside.
AFAIK They only used the 4 speed in the automobiles.

Here is a pic of the VIN. I guess this cab could have been from another chassis, so who knows

Hey that's cool!
I only ever saw the 3 spds in Blazers, not pickups.
But they had Dana 20s hooked to them.
Does the steering column still have provisions for a shift lever & linkages?

Re: Help indentifiying my auto lock hubs on 73 K10

yes the column does still have the remains of the "3 on the tree".

I learned to drive on a column shift 1950's pickup truck and a 1949 Chevrolet Deluxe with the same.
IMHO the 40's & 50's shift mechanisms were more robust than the ones from the 70's. The column shift mechanism isn't that difficult to learn. It's not unreliable if it's adjusted properly with fresh shift rod bushings and it's a cool theft deterrent.
