neutral safety / reverse switch
 

I'd like to get my reverse lights working again, and Im prety sure that its the neutral safety switch. Aparently they go all the time. So my question is this... where do the go? Im almost positive they go on the column, is there any trick to it?

I don't think the neutral safety switch affects the reverse lights. At least not on my stick shift.

On my stick, I've got a pair of wires -- one green one black, which go to a plug on the trans drivers side near the front. These are the reverse wires.

if your park/nuetral safety switch goes out.. you wont be able to start your truck.... i dont think if effects the lights...

I would think that it does affect it. When you shift the column the switch moves over. Replace it and see if it helps.

On a manual truck the the back lights are not affected by the safety switch. The safety switch on a manual is mount above the clutch pedal. The reverse light switch is mounted on the trans. I am not sure what you have, but all this is for manual I have no idea about auto.

I work at an auto parts store. In the manual transmission trucks the switch has a different # and location. In the automatic (which I have) its located on the column somewhere, and our system says its an integrated part. So the neutral safety part still works but the reverse part is no longer functioning. I was just wondering if anyone had replaced one yet? I'm going to have to do it with no repair manual still.

On autos, the neutral, start, and backup light switch is all together in one unit. It's mounted at the base of the steering column.

cool, thx Mike. I already ordered the switch. its only $9 cdn anyways.

Its the white gizmo on the steering column. You can see it if you look up under the dash. It just clips into the column. I replaced mine when I was putting the tilt column in my truck but I did it when the column was out of the truck. Its pretty easy to drop the column or even pull the column out in our trucks.
