dropping a gas tank

1989 v2500 burb.

Any advice on dropping the gas tank on a burb. Anyway to change the pump without having to remove the tank? I want to change the pump before it lets me down.

It is the single tank rear of the axle.

thanks,
Chris

Re: dropping a gas tank

run it almost empty .

start spraying hardware with oil / lube / p.b. blaster / liquid wrench .

floor jack with good size pad on it like plywood .

few new hose clamps for stockers that will prob fall apart if you live anywere near the rust belt .

16mm and 18mm line wrench for hose fittings . there NOT included in most line wrench sets .

ACDELCO https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...301117&jsn=491 pump and sock is what you want to put inside when you do it . sock https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...301117&jsn=507

and if your looking to bump performance now or later go with a bigger pump like this 1995 454 c30 pump https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...034569&jsn=667 holds higher pressure .

the stock tbi pump was lucky to hit let alone hold the 13-15 psi they should run . lots of guys bump up to the later 454 pump and have good results . its also plug and play no mods required to install it .

some guys with older beaters or off road trucks cut a hole in the bed to make a acssess port for the sender .

Re: dropping a gas tank

I have a trans jack and all the tools, I was hoping i could access it from inside but i just removed the rear carpet and no such luck. If I knew where to cut,, I would fab a door in the floor for future access.

Thanks,

the tank came down easy enough but i can not get my strainer off of the old pump. What is the secret?

never mind,,,, it just needed more force than i thought,, i did not want to tear the strainer

Re: dropping a gas tank

always replace the strainer sock .

and there a finger grip on the pump body .

Re: dropping a gas tank

Don't put that baby back in with the original sock.
It voids the warranty on the pump... When it disintegrates the pieces jam the pump.

I'd cut a window in the floor under the carpet and cover it with a piece of floor patch panel. Use butyl or something similar on the edges to keep the outside out.
