1 ton 4x4 conversion
Can anyone tell me if I can convert my 1987Chevy 1 ton 2 wheel drive truck to 4 wheel drive using a 1978 drive train. I have a 3/4 ton doner.

Re: 1 ton 4x4 conversion
it can be done but youll need a intact 4x4 donor frame..i think the 1tons came with a dana60 front
this may help.....http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=546339 http://chuckschevytruckpages.com/robsK35.html https://www.truckforum.org/threads/c...version.15456/ |

Re: 1 ton 4x4 conversion
c and k 30 1ton frames are bigger than 1/2 and 3/4 ton frames .
yes k30 had dana 60 front over the smaller dana 44 or corp 10 bolt axle . the best way if you want the full k30 package is find a whole roller with good frame and driveline and swap your body over . . or find a k30 and fix it up . |
Re: 1 ton 4x4 conversion
Thanks for the response , it's a fire wood truck, so doesn't have to be perfect but 4 wheel drive would sure be nice!

Re: 1 ton 4x4 conversion
Your mounts are different. Meaning 73-80 had different core support/cab mounts than your 81-87. If it's just a woods truck not end of the world. Front mounts swap between 1/2 up to 1 ton though. You'll run into crossmember clearance I think unless you got a good sized lift. Have to swap members, as the motor mounts differently though. I'd just.body swap, and maybe rear springs since you'll have it loaded a lot.

Re: 1 ton 4x4 conversion
If you got a welder and grinder anything is possible. Depends on whether you want form or function?

Re: 1 ton 4x4 conversion
73-80 = 1 style body mount
81-up = other style and its the frame side that makes the choice of mount style . i have a k30 frame with a c-10 body and low hump floor no body lift and th400/203-205 double t-case setup and 1 tiny dent in floor pan . and had to do custom shifter boot anyway so no problem . |
Re: 1 ton 4x4 conversion
Front frame rails above front axle are higher up on a 4x4 frame compared to 2wd.

Re: 1 ton 4x4 conversion
These guys had the imho best 1 ton 4x4 conversion kits. Unfortunately they arent making them right now. You can kinda see what your in for by watching the videos on the website though.
