Where to start?
 
So I have a 1966 c10 pickup longbed stepside with a L6 250(I believe).

Looking to start restoring asap. But not sure where to start.

I plan to rebuild the engine and USE the truck as an actual truck as I continue to upgrade and mod it to the point of just pleasure.

What I need to know is the basics. What should I do first, after engine? Runs now just blown head gasket. Brakes? Suspension? Clean and restore all rubber bushings? new bearings? I want to make this safe all around but I have to go step by step. Truck is legit all original 1966 except a new 3 row radiator I installed when I bought the truck.

After getting the engine running, I would say that brakes should be next on the list and then steering. All safety items first and then nonessential things can be addressed.

Would you do suspension (bags or lowered) at the same same time? Or individual upgrade? Ideally caliper conversion for front and back I'm sure.

Exactly the order I am following with my 66. Keeping it stock for now, will sort out upgrades (PS, A/C, and Power Disc brakes) and cosmetic issues later. Working on the long neglected cooling system with a new OER 4 core radiator on order from Classic Industries (the 292 runs currently), then a complete 4 wheel drum brake overhaul, fluid changes and tires.

No. I would get the truck running and driving safely first. Then decide on what you want to do next. Trying to do too much all at once can easily become overwhelming, which often times leads to selling the project dirt cheap just to make it go away.

Enjoy it while you build it, like the Captn says! This forum has seen many folks with good intentions just loose interest because life gets in the way of plans! Get it running, stopping and safe, drive it while you collect upgrade parts...you will be glad you did!

I try to gather all the parts for a reasonable day or weekend projekt then choose the day or weekend and keep it in drivning condition.

Truer words have not been spoken! This is my first attempt at redoing a vehicle and it is daunting if I look at the big picture...but if I take one piece at a time, it can be done. Take pictures and document everything you do so you can remember how something goes back together. I am trying not to do 5 projects on the truck at once, but one then another....slow and steady wins the race. Good luck..and you won't find a group of better people than the enthusiasts on this board!

For dependability go through the fuel system. That & the brakes deteriate fast even when not in use. Make sure the tank is clean. Check all the rubber hoses. If the fuel pump looks old replace it. The old ones were not designed for the ethanol fuels. O-haul the carb if it does not run good. Its a good idea to put an inline fuel filter in the fuel line.

I would work start with tyres ( cant drive on flats ), brakes and bearing components ( can stop without hearing the humming noise, with also having attention on the rubber hoses ), cheque for leaks ( as engine oil or water coming into cab ), fuel system and than suspension. just my opinion for starters
