67-72 wiper motor ...upgrade?

It's hard to believe, but the last time I posted on this forum was almost 12 years ago and I still have the Longhorn!

After ALL those years of me waffling between ...sell it, keep it, sell it .....KEEP it ...well ...I'm keeping it

Any who ...what are my options for updating the wiper motor. There seems to be only one thread discussing it.

Ideas?

Tom

What are the symptoms? I thought mine was toast but it turned out to just be the connection behind the switch came loose. Does it run at all? -BA

I think Detroit Speed makes a 5 speed direct replacement for us. Not cheap though if I recall. Around $500-600.

I found a link for the expensive option.

The motor still functions but is very slooooooow. It no longer has two speeds.

I use the Newport wipers kit with the intermittent option on all my customers build. very nice product. I have met the inventor/owner at Goodguys car show in Ft Worth, very nice to deal with, and made in America product using all GM components so they can be sourced for replacements.

I have one of the first kits released on my 68, it has been installed for over 9 years, works flawlessly

Are the Newports 'faster' than the original motors ....do they swipe faster?

On my Burban I tore the linkages apart, cleaned and lubed everything. Replaced the shaft seal and greased the shaft, then reassembled. (The seal made a noticeable difference in speed) It works much better now. A little slow for the first 30 seconds or so but then it works good. I have had to use the high speed on occasion when the rain is heavy. It is my daily driver here in NW Oregon. I haven't found any time yet when high speed wasn't fast enough. But I also haven't experienced any deluges like the ones I experienced back in Virginia years ago.
I had to drive the old ladies Lexus a couple of weeks ago in the rain and I'm so accustomed to the slower speed of the truck's wipers, the Lexus's wipers were freaking me out as they are violently fast.
I also installed a intermittent wiper controller from Revolution Electronics. It is great and no where near as expensive as some other options.

Sounds exactly like mine. I'll be watching this thread. I may try lube'n it all up like HO455 did.

Thanks HO455 for the info. I shall try that first.

5 Attachment(s)
Factory motor and linkage works great. I added a electric water jug out in the motor area and squirters off a Tahoe back glass to the wiper arms so I get the whole window sprayed.
I also bought the delay feature from twouvakind who is a memeber here he makes the delay switch for our trucks. It's a plug and play deal.
Check it out here.

That's nice. I only miss intermittent. 2spd works fine for me since I rarely rarely if ever need to use hi. I can't stand them on high. If it's raining that hard it's time to pull over and never have a problem seeing running on low. Twouvakind's delay is all I need. Mo' money for mo' impo'tant things

I did the same thing with my ‘72 Blazer. Stock knob fits right onto switch and looks stock inside. For better spray coverage, I did a similar set up as Andy. I sprayed my arms black so the hose and spray nozzle disappear. It looks and functions great. Mine has the intermittent setting, much needed here in the Pacific NW...lots of light rain conditions. Only complaint I have is the motor seems to be noticeably louder than the stock wiper motor when operating.
